The Karoo National Park situated near Beaufort West is one of the driest wildlife sanctuaries I have visited but it is full of life. I went there with family during a week long school break in the hope of finding lions. They we native to the region but was killed as farms were settled in the region during the 1800’s. Lions were reintroduced in the area in the early 2000’s for the first time again The park was settled with the blessing of the government of the day buying local farms and fencing it off. It was opened in 1979. You can rent one or two bedroom self catering houses and go on self-drive gravel roads in the park. There are also a 4X4 route that take you to the more remote areas of the park. I would definitely recommend those routes. We stayed for four days and say many animals including “Kudus”, “Eland”, “Rooihartebees bok”, “Springbok”, “Zebra”, “Ostrich”, “Klipspringers”, “Blesbok” and “Lions”. We also saw the Rhino’s but due to the animals being poached for their horns you were not allowed to photograph or report their location. At reception there is a large map of the park where you can mark the location of any animals you saw during the day.
