As a local guide, one of the most interesting things I have done is visit McWay Falls in California. I’m a huge fan of using Google Maps to find the unique and unusual and from the day I found this waterfall on maps it was a bucket list destination.
Last October, I was lucky enough to go on a short impromptu road trip through southern-central California and visited many fun and unique destinations. Using maps I was able to locate great hotels and wonderful places to eat and near the end of my trip, I was able to knock an item off my list. McWay Falls. This gorgeous waterfall is unique in that it pours directly onto a non-accessible cove. Standing at the overlook can be busy but if you are patient enough you get the place to yourself for minutes at a time. Once people have cleared the overlook then it’s like you are alone in the world with a beautiful view of the ocean and a pristine cove down below.
The adventure didn’t stop with the view, McWay Falls is home to a few short and gorgeous trails including one that goes over the river that feeds the waterfall. At some places along the trail, we saw no one; it was just me, the person I was traveling with, and the view. This destination brought to my attention by Maps was so amazing and worth the drive. I can’t wait to scour Google Maps for more unique destinations with beautiful views to add to my bucket list.
