Visiting Hawaii of Europe

Azores is known as ‘Hawaii of Europe’. It has 9 islands and on of them São Miguel Island.

When I visited São Miguel Island in 2018 November, I didn’t know anything about the island. It was the first time when I didn’t read anything about my destination, I just saved the places in a map that I found interesting pictures. I went with two friends and every morning we just talked about what we wanted to do and checked the map.

So, I would like to show my top 3 places from São Miguel.
I really like eating, so let’s start with something related: Pineapples A Arruda.

In Europe, this is the only place where pineapples are produced the whole year. The fruit plantation was really impressive because the fruit looked different from the others that I had seen before. The top of the fruit had just a really small green part and the body was so big! The taste was amazing, sweet with some special taste that I cannot describe how tasty it was.

Another special finding was the Gorreana Tea Factory because it is the only tea field in Europe. It was a nice walk around the field. After that, my friends and I had a tour in the factory where we could check the production of dry tea, hear a little bit about the history of the factory and the tea field. In the end, we tried the tea and, as I’m not an expert, I tasted as a green tea. I bought some boxes of tea bags to bring home after discovering that the plantation was free of insecticide and pesticide, so I decided to give to many people as a different gift.

Although the weather was quite cold, around 20 degrees, we visited the same natural pool two times. It is called Ponta Da Ferraria natural swimming pool. The pool was opened to the ocean, so the water from the ocean was mixing with the warm water coming from a rock which made a relaxing water temperature for bathing. The interesting part was that ropes inside the pool indicated the temperature level, the ropes near to the ocean were colder.

This experience was amazing and unforgettable, I can go back any time! After that, I continued travelling, exploring this big world, learning things and collecting stories to tell the others. Let’s continue the journey, Woohoo!
