Visiting Belgium? Avoid tourist traps, go to Mechelen...

Never in our lives did we travel so often and so frequently. Flights are quite cheap and many people take short breaks. There is a lot of information lying aroung on Google about top 10 things to do etc. Most of those entries are being sponsored by commercial organisations.

Especially if you were in Belgium before (or not), it might be interesting to visit Mechelen. It is a smaller town, easily accessible by any means of transportation. Obviously you need to visit the central market square, admire the town hall and the wonderful cathedral. But you can find all that on any website.

Church of St. Peter & Paul

Use Google Maps to reach Veemarkt (behind the town hall). In front of you, the fantastic baroque 16th century St. Peter & Paul church:

Do you know what is so fantastic about this church? The place where it is located (Veemarkt) means: cattle market. There are no less than 14 confessionals (all carved in wood) in the church. It is said to be because many lies were told while trading cattle!

Hof van Busleyden

Take a 5 minutes walk to another peculiar building in Mechelen, located in Frederik de Merodestraat.

It re-opened in 2018 after going through a restauration phase of 8 years!

This palace has always been located in the middle of the city and dates from the 16th century. The peculiarity of it, is that it has mostly been built with tax payers’ money through support from the city and the church.

Nothing new under the sun, is there :grinning: ?

Civilians could get intrest-free loans there as charity.

There are many more less famous corners in this wonderful small town but that will be another story…

Hi @PeterVantieghem

Thanks so much for sharing this post. Your photos are amazing! I’ve never been to Belgium, but I would love to visit Brussels and other cities around it. The architecture and buildings are really beautiful. Are you from Belgium? What’s your favorite thing about Brussels or Mechelen?

I’ve also removed the Dutch label from your post as it’s written in English. Language labels are marked only when your post is in another language to help Local Guides find their preferred language posts.

How do I find posts in my preferred language

Thanks!

Thanks for the great post @PeterVantieghem ! It was like having a mini tour of Mechelen; love the little insights/stories that you have for the places! I was lucky and managed to attend the 2nd European Meet-up in Gent last year and also had a badminton tournament in Antwerp a few months later; so two visits to Belgium! Whoop! Whoop! Belgium is really awesome and I naturally love the chocolates and Kriek beers  Do you know of the other Belgian Local Guides?

oh @DanniS good thx for correcting. No point to write posts in Dutch as people who understand it might already have seen what I am posting (although, I am still surprised). Yes I am from Belgium and thank you for the compliment about the photos. I might be holding an expo later this year.

Should you want to travel to Belgium, let me know your interests and your preferences and I’ll be more than happy to give some tips. If you have never ever been, there are the classic things to see which you can find on TripAdvisor etc…

Peter

Thank you @AdrianLunsong ! Not everybody likes the Kriek beers and we do have many many other brands…

@PeterVantieghem I’m peculiar as I can’t appreciate the taste of regular beers… my taste buds always steer me towards the fruity beers or sweet ciders and of all the fruity beers, cherry beers are my favourites!

Hallo @PeterVantieghem als je graag met andere Nederlandstalige local guides van gedachten wisselt: volgende zaterdag is er een virtuele meetup in het Nederlands. Alle details vind je hier.

Bedankt! Ik kom zeker eens luisteren. Is zo eens iets anders dan zélf webinars geven
