VISIT TO GURUDONGMAR LAKE

Sikkim is a beautiful state which lies in the Northeastern part of India. This is a least populous Indian state which stands at eighth position in terms of area (Reference: https://www.census2011.co.in/facts/smallstates.html). The Northern part of Sikkim is well known for its exquisite scenic beauty which attracts a large number of tourists every year. We visited this place during the month of November (Which was start of Winter season).

  • Gurudongmar Lake:

This beautiful lake is situated at a height of 17,800 feet and is considered as one the most sacred lakes by the Buddhists and Hindus. The beautiful and awe inspiring lake is located at 190 kms from the capital city Gangtok. It remains milky in color throughout the year. According to a legend, since the lake used to remain frozen most of the year, it was not possible to use its water for drinking purposes. When the Guru Padmasambhava (saint) passed by, while returning from Tibet, the local residents are reported to have approached him for providing source of water. The Guru (saint) obliged and a portion of the lake touched by him does not freeze in extreme winter. Since water of the lake is considered sacred, visitors carry the ‘blessed’ water in bottles. It usually stays frozen during the winter months. The scenic beauty here is amazing and will leave you speechless.

Important Notes for the potential tourists: This place is located @17 ,800 feet, the oxygen content at this height will be low and many tourists experiences dizziness and nausea. This is a freezing cold place with high speed winds, In fact it is highly recommended by the experts to not stay here for more than 15 minutes. Please make sure you wear higher end winter clothing when you plan to visit this place, even the boots should be the best Winter Boots, otherwise you can feel the chilled air passing through your feet.
