Thillai Natarajar Temple , in Chidamparam is situated in the southeast Indian state of Tamilnadu.The present temple was built in 10th century. The temple complex spread over 40 acres. It is an ancient , historic temple dedicated to Lord Shiva .
Chidamparam , the name of the city and the temple literally means ‘‘atmosphere of wisdom’’ , the temple architecture symbolizes the connection between the arts and spirituality, creative activity and the divine. The temple wall carvings display all the 108 karanas from the Natya Shastra by Bharatha Muni and these postures form a foundation of Bharathanatiyam, a classical Indian dance.
The roof of temple is held by a set of 64 beams representing the 64 forms of art. It is also held by several cross beams representing the definite blood vessels. The roof has been laid with 21,600 golden tiles representing 21,600 breaths which represents the number of breaths taken in 24 hour period The golden tiles are fixed using 72000 golden nails that represent the number of nadis*(pulses) existing in human body. The roof is topped by a set of 9 sacred pots or* kalasas representing the 9 forms of eneregy.
