We visited the Bhigwan bird sanctuary on 8th February 2020. It is one of the best months to visit this place, as it’s winter here. Flamingo birds, main attraction of this place, love winter season as the water levels are not high. It is recommended to reach early around sunrise, when the nature is at its best.
This place is around 100 kms from Pune (2hr drive) and is located in Pune-Solapur highway. Its quite secluded, so you may not find any signboards on the main highway (you will have to follow GPS!). Once you reach the sanctuary, you will have to hire a tourist boat (fit for 6 persons at a nominal fee of Rs 800/-) accompanied by a tourist guide who also navigates the boat. He will take you to the spots where these birds can be found and provides information about the birds. All the below pictures have been taken from the boat ride.
We could spot 3 flamingos that day, one of which can be seen in the above picture. We were informed that flamingos were less this year due to high water levels and untimely rainfall near Pune.
Love birds were also spotted that day, much to everyone’s surprise! Above picture shows the same, although I don’t know why they are not facing each other, maybe they had a fight ;-).
Below are pictures of other birds spotted that day.
You can reach there by car. It’s in pune solapur highway. Once you reach there, you can hire a boat. Boat ride is 1-1.5 hrs, during which they take to all bird spots. You must visit early in the morning around 7am…
Hey @siyer18 I adore all kinds of birds, that is the reason your post aroused my curiosity and here I am. :]
Thank you for sharing this amazing sanctuary with us.
Are any of the species there protected?
Why not add more details about the photos you took and share your experience while taking them?
This way they can be appreciated even more by other Local Guides, and can drive more interaction. Posts with more content and good photos have a good chance of being featured or chosen for a Friday Favorites post.
Just have in mind for your future posts that sharing a bit more information about your images in general will arouse the curiosity and interest of the other members, and they will have a better understanding of the place. :]
@siyer18 I like your post. It must be a great experience visiting the bird sanctuary. I enjoyed the words that you have written about the lovebirds, that they might had a fight.
While scrolling down the pictures, honestly speaking, I expected more and more. The next time you go to such a place please share with us more and more pictures with us.
Can you please tell me whether this sanctuary is protected by the government or not?
Thanks for your comment! I deliberately tried to put only good photos… This sanctuary comes under village panchayat… Not sure if there is government protection.
