Vilakkuthoon πŸ› Madurai's Tower of Gratitude

:glowing_star: A Lamp Post Built with Love! :glowing_star:

Imagine a time in Madurai back in the 1840s. The people here so admired their Collector, a kind man named John Blackburne, for all the wonderful things he did for their town! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: To show their appreciation, they all chipped in and built this magnificent lamppost, the Vilakkuthoon, near where the old east gate used to stand. It’s become such a famous landmark in our vibrant city! :round_pushpin:

Over the years, our beloved Vilakkuthoon stood tall at the meeting point of S Masi Street and E Masi Street, witnessing the changes in Madurai. While time took its toll, thankfully, the Madurai Corporation and the Tourism Department came together in the early 2000s to bring back its glory! :sparkles: It’s a place that reminds us of our history and the people who shaped our city. Visiting historical sites like this gives us a peek into the past and helps us connect with our roots. :orange_heart:

Have you spotted such historic landmarks in your city to cherish? Share your stories below! :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Firstly I would like to thank you for throwing light about this Vilakkuthoon. I too heard about this Lamp Post @MathanVibranarayan . I am trying to visit Madurai for a long time and somehow I am missing. Hopefully after this Summer I should make it a point to visit.

Excellent topic @MathanVibranarayan

The lamp post is humble yet a shining example of how people remember those who do collective good for society.

Reminds me of T. Chandrashekhar, the district Magistrate of Thane district in Maharashtra 10 years back.

When he was transferred to another place, thousands of people came to the streets, protesting against that decision and insisting on retaining him. He has transformed the district drastically through his sincere and hard work.
