The city of Diokaesareia was a temple center and part of the Olba Temple State during the Seleucid Empire. After the city was conquered by the Roman Empire, Emperor Vespasianus (69-79) separated the city from the center of the Olba state, which was 4 kilometers away, and turned it into a separate city in 72 AD. The city had the right to print its own money. After Christianity was accepted in the Roman Empire, some of the Hellenistic temples in the city were converted into churches and the city became a bishopric center. After the Cilicia region fell into the hands of the Arabs, the city was abandoned. During the Ottoman Empire, a new settlement was formed just east of the ruins, and this town was named “Uzuncaburç” after the Hellenistic tower in the ruins. Today, Uzuncaburç is the name of both the town and the ruins.
