I am an occupational therapist in Taiwan. Helping patients in-need from being disabled to being more able is my job. For patients suffering from mental or physical illness, it’s not easy for them to access places in their daily lives, such as restaurants, out-door tourist spot, even the convenience store nearby. If the place is not disable-friendly. Using local guide program, I could make note of the environment of the shops or surrounding on Google Maps.
There is one time, I took a grandma to a restaurant that isn’t friendly to people with disability. The restaurant has the stray cat at the second floor. We had to climb up to the second floor to see the cat she wants to adopt. I had checked the environment’s photo in advance, to make sure that the stair is not too difficult for her. The stair is small and steep with a weird handrail and, she is the stroke patient with right hemiplegia. We successfully finish the lunch.Grandma look more self esteem and happy.
The most interesting thing I’ve done as a local guide is to help people with disability to return to their daily lives,as much as I can.
