Urgent: Major Disparity in Village Name and Inability to Edit/Suggest Correction (Phaguain vs. Faugan)

Hello Local Guides Team and Moderators,

I am writing this post to highlight a frustrating issue regarding data accuracy and the lack of editing features for a rural area on Google Maps, which directly aligns with the ongoing discussions about rural mapping disparities (referencing this discussion: Why the disparity? Rural public roads deserve the same mapping and accessibility as urban cities).

The official and universally accepted spelling of our village is “Faugan”. It is written this way across all local schools, colleges, and government infrastructures. Surprisingly, Google Maps displays the main village or area name as “Phaguain”.
What makes this situation bizarre is the internal contradiction on the map itself. As you can see in the attached screenshots (Screenshot_20260603-142112.jpg and Screenshot_20260603-142130.jpg):

The main polygon/area name is incorrectly listed as “Phaguain”.

However, all the surrounding landmarks and roads established by the community and algorithms—such as “Faugan Bazar”, “Rajendrapur-Faugan Bazar Rd”, and “Faugan Bazar - Marta Rd”—correctly use the spelling “Faugan”.
The Biggest Issue:
There is currently no option available on the Google Maps app for users to “Suggest an edit” or fix the spelling of this specific regional name placeholder. We are completely locked out of correcting our own village’s identity on the map.

This discrepancy causes massive confusion for delivery services, emergency responders, and visitors. Could a Google Moderator or Team Member please look into this technical limitation and escalate this to the engineering team to officially update “Phaguain” to “Faugan”?

Thank you for your support in bridging the gap for rural map accuracy!

Best regards,
Sikto

There are edit that cannot be performed by the Local Guides.
For more details you can read Google Maps explained: The Onion Theory - What we can / can’t edit in Google Maps
Of course there are at least two ways to fix the issue.

  • you can ask the local administration to do that. Show them this article for them to know how to proceed: https://contentpartners.maps.google.com/
  • write a post on Google Maps Community, and share with them an official cartography, accessible online, issued by a local administration. They will escalate the issue with the team and Maps will fix it.

Hi @ErmesT,

Thank you for your helpful suggestions.

Regarding your second option, I tried visiting the Maps Content Partners link, but as an individual user, I am unable to proceed. When I open the link, I encounter a sign-up form for organizations, along with an error message at the bottom stating: “Error retrieving account: Requested entity was not found” (as shown in the attached screenshot, Screenshot_20260603-163956.png).
Since I am trying to add this missing road as an individual contributor and do not represent a local administration or organization, this platform doesn’t seem to work for me.

Could you please guide me further on how to proceed with the third option (posting on the Google Maps Community with official cartography)? What specific details should I include in that post to ensure it gets escalated successfully?

Thank you again for your time and support!

@realsikto
I already responded to all your questions.

So write a post in there, highlighting the issue, and adding a link to an official Map issued by the local administration
