I maintain a large number of Google Maps lists. One of them (it’s neither my largest nor my newest list) behaves differently from the others.:
The places in this list are automatically numbered, and those numbers also appear on the map. This happens when I use Google Maps on my computer, and I see the same numbering on my iPhone as well.
What is the difference between this list to the others?
Do you observe this “new” view ?

These numbers appear on Google Maps on your computer when Customize list order is enabled in the Google Maps app on your mobile device for the subject list.
If you don’t want to see these numbers, simply Toggle off the Customize list order option in the app.

The special view was caused by enabling Customize list order.
By the way, on Windows (desktop) changing the list order doesn’t work at all, and on iOS it doesn’t work properly.
Yes, this option is currently not available for desktop version.
This is correct @Gaby7, but once we enabled the Customize list order and changed the order using the mobile app (Android), we do see immediately the numbered pins on the desktop (Chrome on Windows 10) and the list is exactly in the order, as we did set in the app.
Since many things are easier on the desktop because of the bigger display, it might be a good workaround if the order of the pins matters.

@WilfriedB On Apple (at least on my iPhone), the list reordering function isn’t working properly. You can drag items to a different position in the list, and even if you choose to save the new order, the app doesn’t actually keep the changes.
