Unravelling the Sacred History of Sri Dalada Maligawa

The Sri Dalada Maligawa, known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is not just a place of Buddhist worship. It is a symbol of historical, architectural, and cultural richness that captivates the hearts of all who visit. This magnificent temple houses the left tooth of Gautama Buddha, drawing reverence from devotees and tourists worldwide. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, it stands as a testament to the unique Kandyan architectural style.

Nestled in Kandy, the temple’s surroundings are a picturesque scene, bordered by the ancient Royal Palace, the Udawaththa Kelaya forest reserve, the Kiri Muhuda lake, and the Natha & Paththini Devala. The spiritual energy that permeates the air is palpable, creating an enchanting atmosphere.

The eventful journey of the Sacred Tooth Relic began in ancient India, in the city of Kalinga. It found its way to Sri Lanka during the reign of King Keerthi Sri Meghavarna, carried by Princess Hemamala and Prince Dantha. Since then, it has been a symbol of Sri Lankan royalty, housed in various locations throughout history.
In Kandy, the first “Dalada Madura” or shrine was built by King Wimaladharmasuriya, only to be destroyed by the Portuguese. However, the temple’s construction journey continued, with each reign adding to its resilience and grandeur. Today, the two-storey Dalada Madura, built by King Sri Veera Parakrama Narendrasinghe, stands as a testament to its history. At the same time, the Octagonal Pavilion or Paththirippuwa, constructed by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, adds to its distinct architecture.
