Unknown Nerkalanjiyam (Granary) of the world

Nerkalanjiyam (Granary) of in Tirupalathurai (Tamil Nadu, India) was constructed during the Nayak king period by the Thangavur Nayak King Ragunatha (A.D. 1600-1634). There is a unique Circular Nerkalanjiyam (Granary) which is 36 feet high and Conical at the top.

It has three opening, one is at the lower end, second at the center and the third at the top. Approximately 3000 Kalams (20 to 50kg Grain sacks) of grain can be stored in this Nerkalanjiyam (Granary). Currently maintained by Department of Archaeology, Government of Tamil Nadu.

In Past this region was called Rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, India as the river waters in and around helped the irrigation and it became more suitable for excellent cultivation of all types of crops in and around this place.
