But the Nigerian Government wisely introduced the amnesty programme in 2009 that was designed to reduce the level of violence in the Oil-Rich Niger Delta Region by engaging the militants in Useful skills instead of going head-on with them using the Military. The Amnesty was meant for empowerment and human and economic development that will help the ex-militants stop the militancy and become useful citizens that are productive in their various communities; the target was to restore and sustain peace in the Niger-Delta region.
In 2009, Late President Umaru Yar’Adua granted an unconditional amnesty for the Militants in exchange for cash and training, the Government opened a 60 days window of Grace for the Militants to drop down their weapons in exchange for the amnesty.
During the 60 Days Grace period, many Militia Gave the proposal a deep thought…
And finally, Majority Of The Fighters Surrendered their Arms and embrace the Peace Deal.
