Where do you buy home essential items? Most of the people in Hyderabad say that they go to Dmart, Spencer’s, Ikea, Reliance fresh, Ratnadeep, Heritage and More supermarket. But the hidden truth is 90% of the population is middle class and below middle class, who can’t afford going to super markets. So they depend on Sunday markets, a temporary marketplace conducted on Sunday with minimal prices. You can get products ranging from match box to second hand bikes. I wondered when I saw a person selling replica of Dove soap for 50 rupees (1/2 kg). Everything is available there from fresh fruits, vegetables, masalas, herbs, plants, animals (hen, goat, eggs, beef), clothes, gas, chemicals, jewellery and the list goes on. Every market is specialized in selling one specific items for example, In Erragadda people come there to buy metal based kitchen items and clothes, where in Yousufguda it’s mainly for fruits & vegetables, and people go to old city for jewelery and wholesale groceries. Middle class people tend to spend in between Rs. 300 to 500 in these markets for their entire weekly groceries including fruits and snacks.
I wish I could get a week’s worth of groceries for that kind of money @Rahulreddy you are right that markets play an important part in our family lives - its no different here in Australia.
Thanks for sharing. When in Chennai in 2006 I visited several markets and enjoyed wandering through the stalls.
Do you have any photos from your favourite market?
Paul
I tried to upload the images and video, but it’s restricting to only 1 image and the size should be below 3mb, which impacts the quality of the image. Could you suggest any other way of uploading images and videos.
