Underwater Mapping going International – Thulusdhoo Maldives

Sri Lanka local Guides started the underwater mapping initiative a few years ago and were able to map so many dive locations around our beautiful country Sri Lanka. However, we couldn’t take our underwater

mapping to the international level.

This is the story of our first-ever underwater mapping expedition outside Sri Lanka.

The Maldives

The Maldives is a country consisting of thousands of little islands. In Sri Lankan terms we called it “Mala Divayina”( Necklace Islands). The Maldives lies southwest of Sri Lanka and India, about 750 km (470 miles; 400 nautical miles) from the Asian continent’s mainland. The Maldives is a chain of 26 atolls(a group of islands) that stretches across the equator from the northmost “Ihavandhippolhu” Atoll to the southmost Addu Atoll.

Interesting facts : The Maldives land area of all the islands comprises 298 square kms(115 sq mi)

Maldives is one of the world’s most geographically dispersed sovereign states and the smallest Asian country.

We arrived at Maldives international airport( it’s a required island) between Male City and Hulumale Islands. We arrived there late at night, hence we stayed at a hotel in Hulumalee. The next day we did some exploring in the Male City and around mid day we headed for our first island Thulusdhoo .

Thulusdhoo is about 27kms(14nmi) away from Male City island. It’s was a 35min ride in the speed boat.

We arrived at Thulusdoo boat jetty in the evening and went to our accommodation place directly.(Surf Deck Guest House). I’ll give a separate detailed post about Maldive Island life as this is dedicated for underwater mapping.

We used Feena Diving center as our Dive guides for the mapping expedition.

We explored four dive sites in Thulusdoo. 3 of them were near Thuludhoo island. But for one site we had to go almost all the way back to Hulumalee. The sites were

It was an amazing experience. Our first dive adventures outside our country. Maldives’ aquatic life is a totally novel world for us. We are simply lost in the beautiful underwater world near Thulusdhoo. We saw a lot of beautiful fish and other aquatic creatures. Met many Turtle friends and Nurse Sharks at Thulusdhoo.

The shark point feeding site is not that beautiful but it was the most existing dive because of the Tiger Sharks, and Bull Sharks are known to hang around there a lot.

We finished our Thulusdhoo expedition in 4 days. The next destination is Rashdhoo… tune in for more existing stuff

Wow amazing story @ravindus ! I never do diving in my life, what do you recommend for beginners like me?

@NunungAfuah , It’s an amazing world down there. You should definitely try it. Have you tried snorkeling? if not I recommend doing that as a start. Then For a beginner(as I once was) I would recommend doing a Discovery Suba Dive(DSD). For a DSD you don’t need any prior training or swimming skills. Your Dive instructor will will teach you everything you need for a DSD and take you underwater. Basicaly he/she will hand hold you throughout the dive. You just have to enjoy the show. I’m sure in Indonesia there are so many amazing dive spots for beginners. I’m tagging our expert diver LG @indahnuria for special insights into Indonesia.

Thank you for sharing your trip with us, @ravindus . The photos and video are incredible. I think you should start pushing for Google to create a new Maps category for these dive spots besides ‘Tourist Attraction’.

@ravindus Wow, Wow Wow. Absolutely amazing stuff. Now I miss scuba diving more than ever by seeing this fantastic footage. I really really want to dive again. Thulushdoo is so colorful and lots of fish around there. I’ve already added the Maldives to my bucket list. Hope soon we can dive together again.

@Ewaade_3A , Hi Hi, thanks for the kind comment. I checked the video and it does work from my end. It’s a normal youtube video. if you go through the link here it should work. I am wondering if it is not loading for other LGs too  :disappointed_relieved: .

I have a couple more posts from last December about a Trip I took to the Mountains of Sri Lanka. Check them out if you have some time.

Thanks for the encouraging comment @JustJake , It’s an amazing world down there. so much more beautiful than what I could capture in the lens. Are you a diver too?

I had this discussion with Googlers some time ago. The response I got is water features has some restrictions for LGs. So to continue with Tourist attractions for the time being. However maybe it’s time to check again and push em harder.

Cheers!

@ravindus I am quite the opposite of a diver. My brain tells my body that the water belongs to the fish (and sharks, and Loch Ness Monster, and Kraken, and Godzilla), and I haven’t been invited :joy: .

I went on a dolphin spotting snorkeling trip in Hawaii once. I was on the edge of the boat waiting for the call to jump in. When they spotted a pod and called for us to jump in, my brain intervened and I just flopped into the boat instead of the water :joy: .

@kasunaaa , yes yes we definitely should go diving and underwater mapping together. What is the Diving season in Vancouver ?

Sri Lanka LGs miss you a lot. We @Rumal95 @SupunW @Yukthi_Isuranga discuss about you a lot

@ravindus , this is wonderful. I wish I could join you. I remember the video call we took when you were in the Maldives. Shall we do a meetup in Maldives  ? Where is the details about Rashdhooo?

@ravindus there is no particular season here in Vancouver. Most people dive in the summer as the water temperature is high. But some divers even dive in the winter. Vancouver Island covers most Vancouver dive sites. Hence, Horseshoe Bay and other popular dive sites are protected from the open north pacific sea. Depending on the water condition and if it is a sunny day Vancouver has excellent places to dive.

I missed you SL LG buddies too.

@SupunW of course my friend, it’s an amazing world down there in the Maldives. There are a lot more places to explore and map. This time we just explored 3 islands. There are hundreds more.

@kasunaaa , Great to hear about Vancouver diving locations. Hope to see your dive post from there.

Wow what a beautiful photos and video of the underworld of water @ravindus . Thank you so much for sharing it with us. It’s just so beautiful under water world. They do have some amazing and colorful creatures. I don’t dive so happy to see someone share it so now i can see how it is. Maldives is a beautiful country.

Keep Guiding!

Hi @ravindus

Your post made me remember when I used to dive. I stopped it after 3 years because it gave me ear problems. However I keep the memory of the strong emotions experienced.
I really have to go to the Maldives, they are beautiful.

Thank you for sharing your post.

@DENIT33 , It’s nice to hear from a fellow diver. What is your favorite dive place?

I’m sorry to hear about the ear problem. Was it a Equalizing issue? I recently faced a ear pain on my right ear with equalizing problem. Now I’m in the process to check if it was due to Sinus. Hope it would be ok.

@ravindus ,

I’ve done many dives in Sardinia, it’s a big island in Italy. At Lake Garda in Northern Italy, to obtain diving patents. In trieste, only once to see a wreck. On the island of Elba, here we descended along a fantastic wall.

The most beautiful dives I’ve done in the Red Sea of Egypt. Now i prefer to snorkel, it is fun and easy.

@DENIT33 , thanks for the dive site info. I will make a note if I get a chance to do dives in Europe region. Special note on Red Sea Egypt :star_struck:. I too enjoy snorkeling a lot
