During my recent visit to Goa, I learnt that there’s so much about this historical place than just beaches and party spots.
When most travelers think of Old Goa, grand landmarks like the Basilica of Bom Jesus or Se Cathedral instantly come to mind. However, just a short walk up the historic Monte Santo (Holy Hill) lies a quieter, deeply atmospheric monument that many visitors miss: The Convent of Santa Monica.
A Glimpse into History & Legend
Asia’s First Cloistered Nunnery:
Construction on the convent began in 1606 and concluded in 1627. It was built as the first and largest convent for women in Portuguese Asia, originally intended to shelter noble women. At its peak, it functioned as a grand “Royal Monastery” adorned with magnificent vaulted ceilings and frescoes.
The Miracle of the Weeping Cross:
Tucked inside the complex is a chapel holding one of Old Goa’s most haunting legends. In February 1636, the image of Christ on a large wooden crucifix inside the convent supposedly showed signs of life—witnesses, including the Portuguese Viceroy, claimed the eyes moved and blood and sweat oozed from the wounds. The event was officially investigated and registered with the Vatican, giving rise to the famous Chapel of the Weeping Cross.
Accessibility Check:
The Convent is wheelchair accessible, with ample parking space. It could get crowded during weekends and peak tourist season. The washrooms are also wheelchair accessible.
Getting There:
It’s about a 10 to 15-minute drive from Panaji. We can easily take a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or a local bus to the main Old Goa complex, followed by a short walk up the slope.
Timings & Entry:
Open all the days from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. No tickets are required to enter the convent.
