Unauthorized Modification of a Newly Added Place on Google Maps

Hi everyone,

I recently added a new restaurant to Google Maps because it wasn’t listed. However, I am not the owner of the business.

  • Restaurant name: Chả Cá Thăng Long Chính Thống
  • Address: 2D Đường Thành, … Hà Nội

A few hours later, I noticed that the listing had been completely altered by someone else. Specifically:

  • The name was changed to Tiệm Tạp Hóa Vân Giang
  • The address was modified to 812 phố Đường Tam Trinh …
  • The phone number was replaced.
  • The website was changed.

I have attached a screenshot showing these modifications.

Additionally, when I search for Chả Cá Thăng Long Chính Thống on Google Maps, it consistently suggests Tiệm Tạp Hóa Vân Giang instead.

I’d like to understand how this could have happened and what steps I can take to correct it. Is there a way to restore the correct information and prevent unauthorized changes?

Has anyone else encountered a similar issue? Any advice on how to report this effectively to Google Maps support would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your help!

Best,
Son

Hi @son2024 , is this the listing you are talking about?

You can easily check it by clicking on the name of the business in your Contribution list.
If so, as this business has 1359 reviews, and many are 5 years old, it is not possible that someone simply modified the name and the address of a new added place.
The only explanation is that the listing you added was flagged as a duplicate of another listing, and the two listings were merged.

First of all you need to confirm that the listing is the one in the link I added above, or that you share the correct link.
Based on your answer we will see if and how it is possible to proceed.

Thanks

Yes, this is the business you identified. However, as you noted, its address is in Yên Sở, which is entirely different from the location I intended to add in Hà Nội (see the first attached screenshot).

At 2D Đường Thành, there is no listed restaurant yet (see the second attached screenshot). The owner does have a website (https://chacathanglong.com.vn/), but after it was hacked, he decided not to list it on Google Maps.

Thanks for confirming.
I could tag a Google moderator to escalate the issue to the team and try to reverse the merging.
However, as you said that

I think we should respect his choice

Thank you for your response.

I acknowledge that I was imprecise when I initially stated that “he decided not to list on Google Maps.” In reality, the situation is more complex.

When you search for the restaurant’s actual name, “Chả Cá Thăng Long,” on Google Maps, it directs you to an incorrect address (see the first attached screenshot). This happened in my case: I arrived at “17 P. Chả Cá, Phố Cổ Hà Nội,” only to find that the restaurant was not there. When I called the phone number listed on Google Maps, a frustrated man answered, telling me, “You called the wrong number.” He might have been exasperated by the ongoing confusion.

So how did I find the correct address? By asking people nearby. When I finally arrived at the real location, I immediately informed the owner about the incorrect Google Maps listing. He told me he was already aware of the issue and had reported it multiple times to Google, but nothing had been done. Eventually, he gave up on submitting further complaints.

This restaurant is well-known and even recognized in the Michelin Guide as one of the rare Bib Gourmand addresses in Hanoi. Notably, the Michelin website lists the correct address. The restaurant also has an official website (chacathanglong.com.vn), though at first, you encounter a warning panel (see the second attached screenshot), which you can close to access the site safely.

Perhaps I made the situation worse by trying to add a new listing under “Chả Cá Thăng Long Chính Thống” (where chính thống means “authentic”), which might have caused further confusion. However, I firmly believe that the existing “Chả Cá Thăng Long” entry on Google Maps should be updated with the correct information provided by the owner.
