Unable to upload photos from Google Photos to Maps

Similar to the problem as noted in the post unable to post videos on maps by @mayank1201 , I am unable to upload a single photo onto a previously added review from Google Photos to Maps. I get the following message which makes no sense to me at all:

An embedded page at docs.google.com says

Sorry! We could not import your photo to Maps. Please try again later.

I have tried on both Windows and Android. I note that others had this same problem in the past and while I posted a message about my current problem in the post by @mayank1201 , given that his problem was uploading a video and mine is uploading a photo I am posting my problem as a separate and new post.

*** Please note I am trying to add a Google Photo to a previously written review and not adding a photo at the point of adding a new review.

Hi @AdamGT

I just made a test on mobile, writing a review I had to write times ago.

After that, I added the photos “on the review” choosing Google Photos as the source, with no issues.

Hello @ErmesT

Firstly, thank you so much for undertaking a test. If I understand your message correctly under your test condition you added the photo at the point of adding the review however, I am trying to add a 2018 Google Photo to a previously written review. I apologise for not making my initial post clear so I am adding this information just in case others will read this in future.

Ciao

Ciao @AdamGT

I did it in four steps:

  1. From Maps App: I added a photo on the POI. Source of the photo: Google Photos
  2. From Maps App: I wrote a review, and added more photos - Source of the photo: Google Photos
  3. From Maps App: I made an edit on my review, for adding another photo - Source of the photo: Google Photos
  4. From Google Photos App: I selected a photo and, with the “share” command, I added the photo my last photo. on the POI in Maps

I did everything from mobile

Ciao @ErmesT

I’m trying to replicate your exact steps. When searching for the photo to add, are you able to search for your photo by its filename (e.g. in my case DSCN6511.JPG) or the Album that it is in? It really is a struggle for me to find the correct historical (August 2018) photo to try your steps on Android. Again thank you for your persistence!

Yes, the search by filename works fine, both on desktop and mobile, I just made a test @AdamGT , but only if you want to start from the Google Photos App

No way to make a search from the Add a Photo command in maps. In this case you have to scroll down, down, down

I am not persistent, I just wanted to use your issue to learn, ad I had a review to write, in any case :slightly_smiling_face:

Let me have a feedback, please

Ciao @ErmesT , we have a solution:

While from within Google Photos you can search for a photo by filename on both desktop and mobile, and while when adding a photo from Google Photos to a Maps review on desktop you can search for that photo on by filename on desktop, you currently cannot do this when adding a photo to a Maps review on mobile! WIthout that filename search capability it extremely difficult if not impossible to add a historical photo from Google Photos on to a Maps review when you have thousands even hundreds of photos. So the best approach is to do this on desktop. However, you need to be careful as of the two possible methods one leads to an error as detailed below:

Method 1: This method leads to an error

  1. Find the review on Maps (easy because it’s the last review)
  2. Select Add a photo at bottom of review
  3. Select Your photos
  4. Enter filename (DSCN6511 in my case)
  5. Click the search icon
  6. Photo appears so I click that photo to tick and select it
  7. Click the blue Select button
  8. Photo is not added to the review resulting in the previously documented error message
An embedded page at docs.google.com says
Sorry! We could not import your photo to Maps. Please try again later.

Method 2: The Solution

  1. Find the review on Maps (easy because it’s the last review)
  2. Select the vertically aligned ellipsis (the three dots)
  3. Select Edit review
  4. Select the camera (with + symbol) icon
  5. Select Your photos
  6. Enter filename (DSCN6511 in my case)
  7. Click the search icon
  8. Photo appears so I click that photo to tick and select it
  9. Click the blue Select button
  10. BINGO the photo is added (but no caption)

*** Note: From what I can see, while Method 2 solves the error problem and allows you to add a photo from Google Photos to a Maps review, unfortunately by this method the description of the photo in Google Photos is not added as the caption for the photo in the Google Maps review! I believe that not having a proper photo caption dilutes the quality of photos on Google Maps but at least we manage to load the photo! Once again the above solution works only on desktop.

Nice, @AdamGT , I’ve just one question: is the procedure working also on mobile?

I’m asking because I cannot replicate all the steps (I can’t find a “search” command).

Do you have some screenshots for illustrating the steps?

I tried testing on mobile @ErmesT , however, with some 50,000 Google Photos, without a search function on mobile I was unable to test. As you know the only way to search/find photos during mobile add is the down, down and down method and this is just impractical for high volume photos! Perhaps a worthy topic for the Idea Exchange!

Thanks for the clarification @AdamGT , on Desktop I was able to replicate “step by step” the issue and the solution proposed by you:

I have searched on Google Photo for the filename of the photo I had to add, and then I tested the two procedures, replicating perfectly the issue and the solution.

You should just making more clear that this is what to do “on desktop only”, while on mobile I was able to add the photo using the “share on Google Maps” command, and typing the name of the POI for finding the right place

As you have suggested @ErmesT I’ve modified the solution with some clarity and emphasis on that this solution is for desktop only. Let me know if you think more change is required. Also, will you mark this as a solution to this easily replicable problem and let the Google developers know about the problem and the solution?

You are welcome, @Giu_DiB

The solution suggested by @AdamGT helped me too.

BTW, please check the issue mentioned on the Method 1

Hope Google Maps will fix it

It was your testing that led me to a thought and final path to the solution @ErmesT so thank you for your high level of support. Actually there are two remaining in issues for @Giu_DiB . Firstly, fix the problem identified in Method 1 and secondly, fix the caption issue in Method 2.
