Unable to post reviews on web and iOS - help!

Hi LGC!

Please help!

For some reason, in the last few days, I’ve been unable to post reviews on any Google Maps extension: iOS App, Chrome or Safari Browsers… The option to review just doesn’t appear…

I have the latest app versions, have logged out and logged in, updated security credentials etc to no avail…

Anyone else having the same issue and more importantly, does anyone know how to fix it?

Hello @davo_dw

The POI is accessible for review.

Are you able to see the “Write a review” option in a guest mode of any browser?

To access the guest mode, click the profile icon near the extensions & select Guest.

If you can see that, then the problem is related to your profile.
If you can’t see the option even in the Guest mode, please attempt that on some other desktop, in both logged-in & guest mode.

Meanwhile, please try revising the 92 numbers of private reviews, to make that public again.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback and I realised I had a couple of lists as private - hopefully this addresses the 92 private review issue.

In regards to contributions:

Mobile:

I’ve switched to ‘Incognito’ and ‘Use maps without an account’ option and still can’t leave reviews on the iOS Application.

Web:

I can leave reviews on web now.

Is this a profile issue or an app issue? How do I escalate to resolve?

Cheers

Hello, @davo_dw

You need tagging a person starting with @. To generate a notification.

You can now add a review through the browser is positive news.

To narrow down further, try accessing the POI through maps.google.com in the mobile browser using Safari as well as Google chrome. You can find a review option there too.

Meanwhile, I have replied your PM on reviews becoming private.

@C_T thanks for your time in responding!

I have the answer. I was overseas last week in Myanmar. It was either a restriction of the local SIM or of the region to post reviews in that country.
I’ve just arrived in HK this morning, put my Australian SIM back in the phone and it works!

in regards to my 92 private reviews, I started going through them and found that 43 are from my trip to Japan last year! In other words, everything I reviewed in Japan went private… how odd .

Thanks for the clarification @davo_dw

The features in the Maps app do vary based on the region registered in Google Play.

It’s surprising to know even a change in the service provider also affects that.

@C_T Thanks!

it could be either the SIM or the country - I have too many independent variables in this experience lol

Hi @C_T Thanks for all of your help with this and I’m going through the process of reviewing my private reviews. Considering you’re across more posts than I, I’ve found more triggers that you can share with others if they experience the same issues. It has been time consuming with ~2,000 reviews to go through but here are the key themes:

  1. as an expression, I’ve used the words: damn, killer and bloody - all of which are everyday slang in Australia but consequentially, common words that have triggered the review to be blocked.

  2. Bulk Reviews - I travel a lot and I make lists of my travels each time. For several recent trips, Brazil, Japan, Melbourne and Morocco - 90-100% of these reviews where removed. Approximately 60-70 of my total 92 private reviews.

  3. Emojis have appeared in a few of these reviews

  4. the remaining 10-15% of reviews - at a loss to describe why they’re flagged as private

That’s an interesting insight @davo_dw

However, one thing is certain. We never use any of the words mentioned by you in business communication.

I use the same yardstick while posting publicly.

Further, though we are sharing experience, a review is neither a blog nor a statement to vent sentiments. That understanding helps in minimising such instances.

one final comment @C_T

If you have a private review or rating on a closed business - it cannot be removed! Lesson Learned.

I’m pretty comfortable with content as it was only <5% of reviews flagged as private out of 1980, it just took time to find which ones. There tended to be a trigger: if I posted a lot in a certain timeframe (ie Melbourne, Newcastle, Japan, Lebanon)… it would trigger a potential spam block… sigh.

I’ve literally spent 5 hours going through all reviews - great to find some gems and be able to create some lists for areas where the functionality didn’t exist at the time… Jordan… Turkey - such good memories.
