Unable to delete duplicate location.

I’ve been finding it harder and harder to get any approved edits on google maps, it’s getting incredibly frustrating when I find places like https://maps.app.goo.gl/yUnZ41Fwj5Tovx6eA which not only is incredibly far away from it’s actual location but is also a duplicate of https://maps.app.goo.gl/kq6au317oLtnr65g8

Is anyone else finding it to be more difficult to get edits recently, or able to help me with this particular location?

Dear friend @Augustus_Ramseyer ,
I get your frustration and it happen to me a lot.
There are not many things you can do as a local guide but there are a few things you can pay attention to and they might help.
I noticed that if you try to first fix all the details in the secondary location to match the primary one it will help.
I can see that the website is the same but the categories and street address are different.
Did you try to first match them to the same category or address before reporting a duplicate?

Hey @JoniG ,

That’s actually a really good idea, I didn’t think of trying that. I’m doing so right now with fingers crossed that I can reduce the three duplicates down to one.

Good luck my friend @Augustus_Ramseyer

Hi @Augustus_Ramseyer

It a balance and not easy to precisely evaluate if edits are harder to get approved because of what edits we propose or if the system has changed. Within the past 2 weeks, I do believe I have seen quite a few extra edits going pending or rejected compared to normal.

If you are specifically concerned about fixing duplicates, I suggest you take a look at my notes on Merge Workflow. It has never been easy to get duplicates removed. I think it is the most difficult/advanced operation Local Guides can master.

Cheers
Morten

Hello @Augustus_Ramseyer

The place at the first link has a Google street view imagery.

The second place is claimed by the owner and has a long existence.

You have to suggest a merger by shifting the pin of the first spot to fall exactly on the second one. That will merge the street also thus making the place redundant.

Nevertheless, there are more ways to correct the data and it becomes useful to try those also.

You can refer the issue in the community tab of the Maps support forum at

https://support.google.com/maps.

However, the fastest one would be the owner taking an action through GMB. Since we link is available at the POI, it would be possible to communicate with the owner in any suitable manner.

Merging two places is a process of patience and application, @Augustus_Ramseyer , @JoniG , and can take time. The reason is that what is obvious for us is not so obvious for the algorithm. So we need to make clear that the two places are duplicate by making them perfectly identical, before to try a merge.

If you analyze the two places, you will see that they have two different categories. Very similar, but different. On my attempt, on step 1, I would change the category of the first one to 3-star Hotel

The pin position was very far away. As the pin was different from the address of the place (the address was the right one), I moved it in the right position.

The website and the phone number are the same, and this is fine, because it is a confirmation that we are not talking about two different places.

Only when your category change will be approved, you could try a merge.

Sometimes it is a bit long process, but it usually works

hello morton… other than your merge workflow, is there another effective method to get an obviously erroneous place deleted? I’ve been trying the standard workflow to no avail. any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

@RMericle

You are trying to merge an address with a building located at another address with the same name / number of the other one, as you can clearly see checking the two locations in Google maps in Desktop

In Fact, looks like there are two “Green Mountain Rd” in Ringtown:

  1. This is the entrance of the road referred to your “wrong place”. You can check the sign in Street View
  1. Here is the entrance of the second “Green mountain Rd” (the one where is located the building you are mentioning as “the good one”)

As you can see, both road have the same name

The real problem, which needs to be solved, is not related to Google Maps. Both photos are dated July 2018, so perhaps something has changed in recent years and one of the streets may now have a different name. If so, the street name needs to be corrected.
Checking if a place has a category, or is it just an address, is extremely important before assuming there is a problem on two places, because without careful checking we could give you an unsatisfactory answer

@ErmesT thanks for the time and detailed response! admittedly, I’m learning my way through here.

Yes I agree that both roads are green mountain road - but the rural green mountain road has no physical addresses between 43 and 177. (it starts at 25-43, then resumes at 177-900). I’ve driven the road myself and accessed the Schuylkill county database. there are no addresses on that road between 43 and 177. There are only 4 parcels of land none of which have a site structure address associated with it.

60-101 green mountain road exists in an Industrial park in hazleton pa about 10 miles east in zip code 18202. truckers are mistakenly going to the rural green mountain road and getting lost - so I’m working on this issue across all the major GPS map programs. (i’ve included some images below to explain the situation)

I recognize after readings through these threads that the distinction between an address and a building is part of my issue. so maybe my question is - how do I remove an address that is there in error? when I used the basic “suggest edit > wrong pin location or address > remove address” process, it said the change was approved and that the address was accepted. this was on Feb 25th. When I tried re-locating the pins from 60-101 to the correct building locations, those changes were rejected.

Would submitting additional photography of both sites help me?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. thank you again.

Hi @RMericle

As you can see, there is no street view in both road, so Google acquired the numbers in an empiric way

There are basically two ways to fix your issue:

  • The right one: Public authorities can submit Geo Data directly in Google Maps. This procedure will definitely fix the issue, and is accessible only by organization or government: Get started with Geo Data Upload . You can contact the local authorities and invite them to follow this procedure to fix the information in Google Maps
  • The alternative: submit an official and publicly accessible online documentation to the Google Maps Help Community , explaining in a clear way the issue, like you did in your reply. The document must be an official document of the local government. They will escalate the issue to the Google maps team. It takes longer time, and require in any case official documents, but can be done by everyone
  • The third option (the one you are trying) takes time and has uncertain results, as you would have to change the house numbers one by one. When some data is not accessible, Google Maps performs an interpolation of the data it has, estimating the other numbers. It will be very difficult to explain to an algorithm that part of the road is miles away, so I personally don’t consider it viable.

Hope this can help you to fix the issue

@ErmesT very very helpful. thank you. I will work through those options with our local municipality that has jurisdiction in these matters.
