Ukraine Photogenic: Basalt Columns & Photography Tricks

It’s not Iceland :iceland: , is not Ireland :ireland: , it’s not Turkey! :turkey: It’s a unique place with the real basalt columns near a small Ukrainian village Bazal’tove on the north of the country, Rivne region. :ukraine:

This place attracts tourists with the beauty of the basalt columns and the lakes formed after the flooding of the quarry.

We were also attracted by this location and would love to present our own artistic look on this place in the next pargraphs. I will also share some secrets how to make an ordinary photoshoot to look more interesting and mysterious! :selfie:

Basalt is a stone of a volcanic origin formed as a result of solidification of lava on the surface of the earth and natural split into columns of various shapes. The height of the basalt pillars in this place varies from one to thirty meters. However scientists do not know the exact information about the period of existence of the volcano on the territory of Ukraine, this remains a mystery… :volcano:

Basalt is called a ‘black gold of Ukraine’ :black_circle: :moneybag: , but to capture it’s really deep black color one should wait for a significant shower. Without the water on the surface of the columns they look rather gray or brown.

We were lucky if we can say so, and on the day of the photoshoot a really strong shower began and the columns became totally black! :black_heart: It was already evening and to make the pictures look more mysterious we decided to use the colorful filters on the portable flashes to make some colorful spots of light on the background. Of course to light the face of the model we used also a portable flash with a normal white light without any colorful filters on it. With the red filter on a portable flash :zap: the black wet basalt columns looked like a real molten lava :volcano: . And it was also one of our ideas, to underline the volcanic origin of the location.

So it was quite cold :snowman: because of the rain, we were totally wet :droplet: , the kilograms of the wet clay were sticking to our shoes :hiking_boot: , but finally we received the pictures we wanted on which basalt columns looked really black with parts of them looked like a molten lava because of the red filter we used on the flash, it was our small photographic trick. :red_circle:

And a few minor tips about the look - how to make it fast and easy. A classic and ordinary long black dress plus a long lace cloth, flowing down or blew with the wind can make your outfit look really interesting and fairytale. The look is completed with makeup and a crown. A minor detail, we used a lace of a teal color, that is why on the filters we used colors which are combined with teal - shades of blue :large_blue_circle: and green :green_heart: or contrasting colors, for example, red :red_circle: , or colors combination!

Hope you enjoyed reading! :grinning: :slightly_smiling_face:

@ValerieSobakar Вот уж действительно - Хозяйка медной горы!

Место впечатляющее, но без таланта фотографа это мало бы значило. Браво!

Please, have in mind that there is a fine line between promoting and presenting something that you like a lot. Promotion is against the rules of Connect.

Fantastic @ValerieSobakar what a really great place to do a photoshoot. I must add that your model looks very Celtic, I like that. I also really like the flooded part with the Digger being sunken.

Thank you for your feedback!

I read the article you mentioned when writing my own. I shared info about the place, location, history, photos in different angles and photography tricks if someone wants to do something similar even in the other location.

Photography is a part of my job and I don’t see anything bad in sharing my inspiration with others, especially during hard times because of the Covid-19 when so many people are depressed.I didn’t even had an idea of promoting or selling something, in your opinion, what do I promote?

Thanks for the information about the cave in Bulgaria, I would love to visit it, I think with colorful filters on the flashes it would look super-fairytale!!:star_struck::fairy: :crystal_ball: :sunglasses:
