The sun shines over me at Cave Creek Regional Park.
My head pulses with a migraine.
My shoes crunch over the gravel.
One foot, then the other, then repeat.
Suddenly, the rhythm is interrupted as my left foot goes airborne.
My right shoe strikes something on the trail.
My body lurches forward from the momentum, and at the last moment, I catch myself before I slide onto the ground.
My torso swings back, my eyes scanning for what offending object tripped me.
My gaze softens. On the trail behind me is a heart-shaped rock.
I take a picture.
Over the years of my visits to Cave Creek Regional Park, Spur Cross Ranch, and once at White Tank Mountain Regional Park - I would come across heart-shaped rocks. They would often âshow upâ when I was feeling my lowest. Some heart-shaped rocks were big and implanted into the trail. Others were smaller, and I would occasionally take them home as a keepsake.
Sometimes, I would also see heart-shaped cacti. The one below I saw while at Spur Cross. The day was so windy, and it looked like it might rain. Then, the clouds parted and the sun peeked through. The rays made the spines of the heart-shaped cactus glow.
How about you fellow Local Guides? Have you seen heart-shaped objects in nature?
