Trip to Amsterdam with my family

Hi everyone,

I’m travelling with my family to Amsterdam from 19 to 23 of June/2019. We are a family of five person and my three kids are 12, 10 and 2 years,

I’m wondering if someone could help me with suggestions of places to stay (hotels, hostels or houses in short rent as AirBnb or similar) and what to visit on the days we’ll be staying.

I’ll be waiting for your suggestions, I’ll be very thankfull to everyone who can help me and my family.

Kind Regards

Gonçalo Maggessi

Hi @GoncaloMaggessi ,

It’s great that you will go on a trip with your family in Amsterdam. I visited Amsterdam 4 years ago but only for one day and that’s why I cannot give you any recommendation but I am sure that @MoniDi can give a suggestion where to stay because she visited the city as well.

Here I will share with you one of my photos from there. I liked the city a lot because it’s very clean and the architecture is amazing:

Have a great trip there!

Hi @GoncaloMaggessi , my wife and I stayed here https://goo.gl/maps/ZUtsUQ9qn9C2 and couldn’t fault it. It also has excellent restaurant downstairs. It is central city, close to railway station. Room is quiet from outside noise.

Hey @PoliMC , thanks for the tag.

@GoncaloMaggessi , Amsterdam is worth visiting! You are going to have a lot of fun there, not only because the city has a lot of things to offer but also you are with your family.

I was there with a friend of mine and we stayed in a well-known low cost hotel chain. You should check for some places online and see what are the options. I am sure that you will find something on a budget. My advice is to look for something outside of the city, it would definitely be cheaper. And what is more, the public transport is very well organised there.

Perhaps, you should brace yourself for some rain. Below I’ve added a photo. As you can see, the weather was not on our side. Right after this photo was taken, it started heavy raining.

Hi @GoncaloMaggessi ,

I do agree with @MoniDi on this one. It’s much cheaper if you rent something outside the city center. The place that I found was a 22 qm room, near the Red Light District, which for a person with kids, probably isn’t the best option, but my point here is that my stay there was in total 273,00 € for 3 nights. That’s the best offer that I found then and I booked it via Homeaway. I love Airbnb, but then this was the best proposition that I discovered.

If however you book something in the Oud-zuid neighborhood, for example, I’m sure that the amount that you’ll pay will be much less. One other good thing about this particular district is that it’s full of really gorgeous parks.

Amsterdam-Noord is also a really nice neighborhood, which is not far from the city center and with the help of the free ferries 901 and 907 you can get to the center in no time. It’s really depends what exactly you are looking for and what do you want to visit.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. I would be more than happy to help you with what I can.

Hi @GoncaloMaggessi ,

Here’s a list with places that may interest you, these are mostly touristic so you may already know them: Amsterdam.

The NEMO museum in the list is a great place to go with kids.

I also made another list with cheap restaurants that also have vegetarian options. Many of them have typical food locals eat. You can see it clicking here.

I loved the Holland’s Hap Hmm restaurant and Rob Wigboldus Fishmonger.

You’ve collected a really good variety of places. I hope you won’t mind if I use your list for my next trip to Amsterdam @Jesi .

Thanks for the tip @PoliMC , I’m sure we’ll enjoy the trip.

Hi there @TheEagleEye thanks for the suggestion. I’ve been on their website and they don’t have rooms for families, but thanks anyway.

Hello @MoniDi and thanks for your help. I’ve been checking in some websites but the prices are high, specially for 5 people like my family!

I was thinking on private houses or so for short rent, maybe it would be cheaper.

Hi @Jesi ,

I already seen yor lists and saved it on my google maps! I thank you for the help with this lists, they will be helpful when we visit Amsterdam.

Thank you ver much…

Netherland is a family friendly place. You can find good holiday. Houses there. I have as well 3 children + dog, so better you find something close by the see and travel to Amsterdam whenever you like.

You should for sure take a boat trip with your children. Around Amsterdam a bicycle trip. If you are lucky it is not to windy.

Don’t miss to visit windmills. This I remember most when I was a child …

Hey @GoncaloMaggessi ,

You can check if there are any apartments available for renting. I am sure there are a lot of places where you would be able to stay with your family. You just have to check your options thoroughly and make the final decision.

Our hotel was very close to the airport, so you can check the area.

Hi @GoncaloMaggessi ,

You are welcome!

I am happy that the other Local Guides helped you with their suggestions.

I wish you amazing trip there!

I agree with @TorM . You should without a doubt try Amsterdam’s amazing bicycle lanes. You can even go outside the perimeters of the city with the safety of your own bike. It’s simply brilliant. There are a lot of rental bike shops across the entire city, but I personally decided to use OV-fiets, as it was a lot cheaper and more useful at least for me. Feel free to check them out and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
