I am really happy that you chose to visit China and especially the capital - Beijing. How long will you be staying there?
I have lived there for some time and could give you some suggestions. It really depends on the time you have, but your priority should be to see the Great Wall. The most visited part of it and the easiest to reach by foreigners is Badaling Great Wall. There is convenient public transport. Though if you have friends there, you can ask to visit the Water Great Wall at Huanghuacheng or other less visited parts.
Inside the city there are plenty of places you can go and explore. Undoubtedly the most famous are a must to be seen places - the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Temple of Heaven, Houhai and Beihai lakes.
Should you have some extra time, you might find the Flagrant Hills very fascinating, especially in Fall when all the forest is getting yellowish and reddish.
