Travelling between North & South Islands of New Zealand

Travelling between the North & South Islands in New Zealand is very easy and scenic. The most common way other than flying is by ferry.

The ferries carry passengers with or without a car. Trucks and Rail carriages are also on the ferry.

Check-in, loading, and disembarking is also very easy and hassle free.

Hi @TheEagleEye ,

This is great, thanks for sharing!

I’ve actually been wondering about the ferry and how things work. According to the route sketched on Google Maps, the ferry goes from Wellington to Picton and vice versa.

Can you tell us how long it takes it takes to sail this route? Also, are passengers required to book tickets in advance or can you just show up in your car and be certain for a spot on the ferry?

By the way, great photos! The ones with the sun rising behind the ferry look amazing.

Hi @MortenSI , it takes about 2 1/2 hour but that is dependant on weather at times. It is a nice trip during nice weather but can cause sea sickness during bad weather.

Walk on passengers will normally be able to pay and board without booking. If you have car or camper van, it pays to book because of limited capacity for vehicles.

It was actually longer than I expected @TheEagleEye , but for me it would be part of the experience.

Thanks once again for the great travel tips! I could almost put together a full itinerary reading your posts.
