Traveling Like a Local - Italy - Montagnana - Exploring the walled city

Arriving in Montagnana by car is like landing in the Medieval age, traveling with a time machine.

Looking around, you can wait to see horses and knights, with the sound of a horn vibrating in the air.

The wall, the towers, everything is moving us back in the time

The city wall is one of the best preserved in Europe, built in the actual structure probably on XIII century

You can reach Montagnana by car in one hour and 15 minutes from Venice, traveling near the “Colli Euganei”, a group of Volcanic Hills near Padua, or by train, from Venice or from Padua

The city have four gates, one on each side. The two most important gates are protected by two Castles

The Rocca degli alberi is protecting the West side. A fortress, with rooms for 100 soldiers, the capacity of storing food for six month, and an incredible defensive structure: four consecutive gates, each one protected from the top, from a safe position.

You can see here how the protective system works

Near the castle, in a small garden, you can find a group of war’s machines. Copy of the originals, the machines were built by a volunteer, withe the original projects found on the archive of the municipality.

From the castle, we followed the wall clockwise, esploring the city. Every 50 meters, a tower is rising over the wall

Following the wall, you can find how, on the '50, it was used as a base for building houses, lean against the wall.

They used also a tower as a base. This is quite strange to see:

In the other side of the city, you will fing the “San Zeno Castle”, built on 1242, that is now the city hall

There is much more to see, in Montagnana, so feel fre to ask, and I will try to give you more information.

Last step, for today, a quick walk on the beautiful main square

You are welcome, @FaridTDF

There is a big part of Italy that is unknown, and the walled cities are an interesting aspect. The cities were an active part of the three independence wars, in the century XVIII. I will post more about this area soon

The photos and the narration reminded me of some English films like ‘Brave Heart’ etc. Thanks for letting us know a bit about this historic place @ErmesT .

Yes, I agree Lucio.

Fortunately Street view did a good job in there, even if some narrow road still missing

Looks you were on a movie set @ErmesT . So perfectly crafted. So still with no people. No noise other than nature. Was it really like that?

Cheers,

Karen
