I’m from a small Dutch-Caribbean island called Bonaire, with about 17,000 inhabitants. I know that I’m incredibly fortunate to be able now to travel the world and share with them and others the beautiful hidden gems that I’ve found.
The coolest thing is that I’ve been tracing back my ancestry through historical accounts and a DNA test. It showed me that I’ve been going to places where my ancestors were from, and it’s been a fantastic experience to see the places where they walked, to sample the local delicacies that they ate, and soak in the views that they grew up around.
One example is when I traveled to Portugal to the town of Sintra. The architecture, the colors, the food reminded me of my island’s traditional references to the Portuguese ancestry. The warmth of the people, the language similarities, and the pastries of Belem all gave me a deep sense of fulfillment as I walked in the steps of my ancestors. Experiencing this legacy is the reason why Google Local Guides program means so much to me. Writing reviews and posting pictures allow me to leave a trail for current and future generations to discover all the amazing places that are part of our world heritage.
I enjoy going off the beaten track and finding these precious places that make up the beautiful tapestry of a city or town. Just like Spikizi, off the busy Witte de Withstraat in Rotterdam, owned by a group of young Cape Verdians who mix their music, passion, and extraordinary taste into a dynamic cocktail bar experience. Being able to review them and put more spotlight on these places creates an authentic experience of the city for visitors and locals alike.
Google Local Guides is at the center of cultural exchange and creating memories that will last a lifetime. I’m so proud to be part of this program.
