The challenge of being a local guide is to write a review that is honest, factual and does not grill a venue owner if a service was not perfect. It’s about choosing the exact wording, the best sounding echoing tone, since it’s hard to say how a text o a picture is interpreted by the reader. During my journeys as a journalist across Africa I take time to visit restaurants, check their menu, and see how the place looks like. I call hotels and ask whether I can come and have a look. They usually welcome me with open arms. Am not asking for a free lunch or a night’s stay. Just want to be honest and expect them to be the same. Then it’s great at the end of the day to sit somewhere on a terrace with a beverage and write wonderful words.
