Tour to Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary

Hello Folk, Let’s take another good tour of Little Switzerland of India, Udaipur City in Rajasthan, India. It’s a small city surrounded by natural and man made lakes. Ironically Rajasthan is most desolate place in India but few districts that are close to state Gujarat and near western boundary of India are blessed with lush greenery. There is big mountain line that stops Monsoon going further keeping the south west rajsthan green and rest of it it desolate. I visited Udaipur in Oct 2019 it’s pretty suitable time as winter approaches North India during this time. Any other time could be extremely cold or hot though it’s pretty moderate there in Udaipur. I heavy relied on Google Maps from booking to planning of my every visit. I already marked places and planned according to distance and time. I will post related to nature and environment as 22nd March is celebrated as World Water Day.

  • Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary

It’s around a place called Sajjangarh Fort. This fort was built by one of the Maharana (King) of Udaipur to keep an eye on coming Monsoon* . This fort is located atop of a hill which is part of Aravali Hill series. So the king used the place for weather monitoring and lush greenery around the fort for hunting in early 19th century. In 1987 an area of 5.19sq Kms was converted into a Wildlife Sanctuary. It falls under Rajasthan State Forest Department.
In 2017 this area was extended and total 28.7 Sq Km was declared eco sensitive zone by the Govt of India.

(Monsoon* is a seasonal rainy phase in India. It’s British term used in India and neighbouring countries. Monsoon rains occur in West Africa and Asia Australia region)

  • It’s open to tourist all around the year when you visit the place you can get the ticket as per your requirement (separate ticket for Camera and Foreigners). You can hire a golf cart to take nice and quick tour of the sanctuary and see all the rare and lovely animals in the sanctuary. There are boards (in English) with full details near the area where particular animal lives in. You can take tour by yourself if you have the time as area is quite big and takes time to reach each place. There is also two way taxis for Sajjangarh Fort which again an amazing place it’s at the top so gives the best spot for photography and capture the essence of Udaipur and it’s wildlife sanctuary. It’s teeming with tourists doesn’t matter at what time you visit it. People also used this place for hiking but I reckon it’s for hikers not for amateurs as it’s sanctuary full of animals when it get dark it’s not safe.

Who can visit

  • Everyone can visit the place almost 40% people are foreigners. Udaipur itself is one of the favorite location for foreigners as weather is quite mild compared to rest of India. From kids to old to differently abled all can visit the sanctuary as well as Sajjangarh Fort as taxis and carts ply to the very end.

What time is most suitable

  • Oct - Nov and mid Jan to mid March is suitable time. Towards March it starts getting hot there but I assume sunset and sunrise is best in this month.

Expense

  • Very affordable. Tickets are very inexpensive whole tour could be very affordable if planned in advanced.

How to visit

  • There is 6 hrs train from Delhi to Udaipur. Which runs almost all days of the week.

Hey @Trail_blazer ,

Thanks for the detailed information about this place. It looks like a great escape from the big city. Do you know if there is a public transport available? Is there a parking where visitors can leave their cars?

As far I know there is no dedicated parking area for private and personal vehicles. But if you hire any vehicle from railway station or your hotel then that rider will handle all the arrangements even he will tell you about the tickets and most suitable timings related to trekking etc. By the way it’s not crowded at the gates that’s where driver will drop and pick up tourists but I can guarantee the hired taxis have no issues with parking.
