Touching the Sky: My Unforgettable First Paragliding Adventure in Kamshet, Maharashtra

Paragliding had always been on my bucket list, and finally, I got the chance to experience it — and what a ride it was! My first-ever paragliding adventure happened in Kamshet, a picturesque destination near Lonavala, Maharashtra, known for its scenic beauty and perfect wind conditions for free-flying. Here’s a detailed account of that unforgettable day.

:motorway: The Journey from Mumbai to Kamshet

We started early in the morning from Mumbai, filled with excitement and nervous energy. The road trip was smooth and pleasant, with the cool morning breeze and light traffic adding to the experience. By around 8 AM, we reached Kamshet via the Mumbai-Pune Highway.

Our designated meetup point was Rangoli Pure Veg Restaurant, located conveniently near the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. This place seems to be a popular rendezvous spot for adventure seekers heading for paragliding in Kamshet.

From Rangoli restaurant, the organizers arranged a gypsy ride to the hilltop where the paragliding was scheduled. The ride itself was an adventure — bumpy and dusty, but with scenic views and a sense of anticipation building with every turn.

Upon reaching the hilltop, we were greeted by a team of certified instructors. The view from up there was breathtaking: rolling hills, a light mist, and the occasional glimpse of colorful paragliders floating in the sky.

:parachute: The Paragliding Experience – Floating in the Sky

Before the flight, we signed a consent form, got our safety gear on, and received a short briefing from our pilot. The nerves kicked in as I waited for my turn, watching others take off — a run, a lift, and then suddenly they were airborne.

Then it was my turn.

As I ran towards the edge with the instructor behind me, the parachute caught wind, and before I knew it — I was flying, like a bird. The sensation was surreal. The wind in my face, the ground shrinking below, and an indescribable feeling of freedom took over. The Pawna Lake and expressway were looking very tiny from the sky.

We soared over valleys, fields, and tiny villages. The instructor occasionally adjusted our direction or pointed out landmarks below. The flight was smooth, calm, and almost meditative. We hovered like birds, suspended in air, with the vast expanse of nature around us. He handed me over a go-pro camera to record and capture the moments. The entire flight lasted about 8-15 minutes (depending on wind conditions), but those moments felt timeless.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience — a blend of peace, thrill, and awe. I landed safely with a heart full of adrenaline and joy.

:round_pushpin: How to Reach Kamshet

  • From Mumbai: Drive via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway towards Lonavala/Kamshet. It takes around 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic.
  • By Train: Board a train towards Lonavala or Pune and get off at Kamshet Station. From there, you can take local transport to the paragliding meeting point.
  • Meeting Point: Most organizers use Rangoli Pure Veg Restaurant (near the expressway) as the pickup point for hilltop transport.

:light_bulb: Special Tips for First-Time Paragliders

  1. Book with certified and reputed operators – Safety is crucial.
  2. Wear comfortable clothing and closed shoes – Avoid sandals or heels.
  3. Don’t eat heavy meals before the flight, but don’t go empty stomach either.
  4. Carry sunglasses, sunscreen, and a water bottle.
  5. Listen carefully to your instructor — they’ll guide you smoothly.
  6. Capture the moment – Most operators offer GoPro video footage (ask beforehand).
  7. Be patient with weather delays – Flights depend entirely on wind conditions.
  8. Reach Early Morning - Early morning winds are goods for glide.

:warning: Important Caution: Beware of Frauds!

Kamshet is a popular spot, and unfortunately, that attracts fake agents or unauthorized operators who claim to offer paragliding services. Always:

  • Book through verified websites or recognized paragliding clubs.
  • Check reviews and ratings online before booking.
  • Avoid deals that seem too cheap – genuine operators follow safety protocols which reflect in the cost.
  • Do not pay in advance to unverified people or roadside touts.

:compass: Final Thoughts

Paragliding at Kamshet was an unforgettable adventure. From the scenic road trip to the gypsy ride, the hilltop winds, and finally soaring through the skies — every moment was special. If you’re considering trying it, I highly recommend it. Just be safe, book wisely, and prepare for an experience that will stay with you forever.

Oh no, so sorry to hear it got canceled because of the wind and weather! They really do play such a huge role in paragliding. That’s exactly why the instructor told us to come before 9 AM — to catch the best conditions! @TravellerG
