"Total Photo Views" reduced 303,000 overnight & weekly view count average has gone from 1.2m to 550k

Hi all.

I keep fairly detailed records of my local guide data in Maps. So I actually have significant amounts of data I can offer if needed. But to summarise…
I’ve had the total photo views reduce in the past but only by a few thousand here and there and more often than not a few days later a day comes in with a big total (Like they missed counting a few thousand on Weds but then added it on to Sat, for example) This time though it was reduced by 303000 overnight and a week later I haven’t got those views back. My data indicates that I average 160k to 170k views per day (Around 1.1 to 1.2 million views per week)

Here’s the data for the days in question
On Sun 12 Nov = 28,521,880 views
On Mon 13 Nov = 28,687,440 views (In line with the daily average increase
On Tue 14 Nov = 28,384,200 views (A 303,000 reduction)
I’ll post the screenshots of the total view count at the end of this text…

There was no activity on my account for days surrounding the 13th - Didn’t add or delete and photos, my contribution number stayed the same at 22,612, my points didn’t change at 59,021…absolutely nothing changed except my total photo view count. I’ve waited a week to see if the situation rectifies and I get a big photo view increase one day (That’s happened many times) but no, my weekly view count is similarly very low. Here’s the data…

W/E Sun 23 Oct = 1,105,800 views
W/E Sun 5 Nov = 1,190,260 views
W/E Sun 12 Nov = 1,251,620 views
W/E Sun 19 Nov = 797,160 views

So, W/E 19 Nov is 454,000 views lower than the previous week and about 400k lower than my average weekly view count.
Rather than an accounting error it actually looks like they’ve taken 300k off my total view count. I’d really like Google to investigate this issue but dont know if there’s a path to request that.
If they are rectifying an “Over-credit” of views in the past thats fine but if it’s not that I’d like to know what’s happened so I can avoid the issue in the future, if that’s possible.

Update Mon 27 Nov. The weekly total for photo views for W/E 26 Nov is just 551,000 (Around 600,000 views lower than my recent weekly average). So, the anomaly continues. here’s an extra bit of information that again shows the “Total Views” number is just wrong…I track 28 photos daily (The top 20 in terms of individual view count and 8 with much lower totals that are performing well & increasing their view count quickly) The increase in photo views for these 28 photos alone comes to 580,000. How can the total views count increase by only 515k when these 28 photo’s increased by 580k (Bearing in mind I also have the views of another 4512 photos to add to this 580k) In the last few months I have analysed which group of photos contribute what amount to the grand total and the data indicates consistently that the top 20 photos (Top meaning highest view count) constitute 52% of the grand total (Meaning the other 4520 photos give me 48% of the grand total) Last week the top 20 photos increased their view count by 514,710, so the other 4520 photo’s would have given me 475117 views (So, a total view count of almost 1 million). BTW, it isnt an update delay as the last increase in “Total Views” happened Sunday evening - Went from 29,807,130 to 29,870,380 (An increase of 63,250).
My average daily increase over the last 2 weeks was 96,321 views per day
The 2 week period before this had a daily average of 174,420 views per day.

Many thanks

John

Hi @JohnBow

I’m not sure I can help you, and it is extremely rare that Google employees will investigate or provide explanations.

Here are what I came to think of when reading your post.

The photo views are recounted only once or twice per week (sometimes less frequently) so the notion that you are able to report daily views accurately pussel me? Please elaborate on your method. I was never able to get better resolution than weekly averages of views.

Argh, maybe your W/E means “week ending”.

It could be that one or more of your photos have been taken down for violating the guidelines. Are you familier with tracking your number of hidden contributions?

There could also be variations in how Google is using out contributions. Recently, Maps started showing a lot more videos on Maps. This comes with the cost of still photos being shown l as frequently.

All the best

Morten

@JohnBow

I now took a look at your photos.

I would recommend that you strive to use landscape rather than Portrait orientation when shooting for Google Maps.

Also, it seems that you missed the guideline related to not sharing redundant photos. Your photos uploaded to https://maps.app.goo.gl/PotugnR3oAuviLJm7 are clear violations in my opinion.

Your photo uploaded to https://maps.app.goo.gl/WhB1mNSs77SfSDjGA is also a no go. Screenshots can not be shared Asif they were your original work.

You might like my Storefront Photography series found here. You can learn how to make better photos for Google Maps and how to get more photo views.

Ps I like your profile text on Maps.

@MortenCopenhagen and @JohnBow reg. “It could be that one or more of your photos have been taken down for violating the guidelines.” another guess:

Not so long ago, I received mails saying some of my reviews/photos were hidden because the place had been removed from Maps (for whatever reason). If this happened, possibly without any notification, one or more photos with many views posted to such a place might be hidden now. Consequently, this should reduce the total views by a big number very quickly …?

@MortenCopenhagen reg. "The photo views are recounted only once or twice per week ":

This may or may not be true for the Total Views, from my experience, the number of views shown on the desk top for single photos increase in real time (when watching at My contributions → Photos)

@JohnBow how do you keep track of the views for individual photos? Did you find or create any tools for that? I started to do so for the 10 most watched pictures, by typing the numbers manually into my photo database, but it is quite time consuming and boring.

@WilfriedB

You are correct that the view count for individual images are updated in almost real time. We were discussing the total only.

The moderation system is undergoing baby changes. And whether you get notifications or not depends on the location.
