Thanks for asking. No, the local guides program is a volunteer program. If we got paid for reviewing places and making edits the chances are that a few would try to make as many as possible just for the money. That could very quickly lead to bad data on the map. I feel it is very rewarding just knowing that my edits, reviews and pictures makes a difference and helps a lot of people and businesses.
Imagine how payments would screw with the honesty in reviews.
If possible please ask for more details from your friend how he made money on being a local guide. It is probably a misunderstanding or some shady business.

@MortenCopenhagen he already focus nicely on this issue.
It has been discussed before on this matter. Google Local Guides is a Volunteer service, so Google won’t pay you for that. For contributing on Google maps you will get points and there is no money value of this points, only you can raise up you contribution level. As a contributor you will be recognised by Google as Local Guide.
If some saying that he could earn money then it’s not true. However, time to time Google sends some perks depending on your contribution.

Συμμετέχεις σε αυτό επειδή θέλεις να βοηθήσεις άλλους χρήστες μέσα από τους χάρτες της Google. Ενδεχομένως, ο φίλος σου να έλαβε κάποιο προνόμιο, θα μπορούσες να προσθέσεις κάποιες περισσότερες πληροφορίες για αυτό;
