Introduction:

As Local Guides, it’s often amazing which of all of our great photos we contribute to Google Maps has the most views. We’ve come to call this our star photo and this post is all about such stars. It’s an update on the 2 June 2023 Top 100 Star Photo Leaderboards post and contains a set of leaderboards that, as well as showcasing the star photos of hundreds of Local Guides, presents a very detailed analysis of their performance. Whether you’re a Level 10 or a Level 4 Local Guide, we all have a star photo, so you can join in to showcase your star, and it’s simple to do. So what can you learn from the Star Photos Leaderboards?

Well from the very detailed analysis of the star photos of the hundreds of participating Local Guides from some 80 countries, you can learn a lot about what type of places and what type of photos seem to get the most views on Google Maps and remember, views are important as they indicate how helpful your photos are to Maps users.

Is this a competition?

While there is an inherent competitive element within them, the aim of these leaderboards is to motivate us, help us to think about and monitor our contributions and performance, and show us how we can improve the quality of and make better contributions so that we achieve better results all in a fun and enjoyable way! If this can be done then these leaderboards will have achieved their objective; mission accomplished!

How to Read the Star Photos leaderboards (July 2023)

Briefly, this is what you need to know about the leaderboards in this post. For more details see the leaderboard documentation:

The leaderboards in this post present details about the star photos of hundreds of participating Local Guides from all over the world. As well as an overall leaderboard, you will see leaderboards for different Local Guide levels which provide you with direct comparisons of your star photo’s performance with that of your peers. Finally, there’s a leaderboard ranking the top 100 star photos by average star views per day which gives an indication on how good your star photo is.
The average star views per day is calculated by dividing the star views by the life of the star photo expressed in days. The life of the star photo is equal to the number of days between when you first uploaded your star photo on Maps and the date that you last updated the star views and thus, will be different for each participating Local Guide. Therefore, for accuracy of the information it is important you enter the correct dates.
As well as the star views and the date uploaded onto Maps, each listing on the leaderboards shows the Maps Category, and a description (e.g. Storefront, Building or Park) of the respective Local Guide’s star photo.
If the Maps Category of a star photo is shown as a link and if the name of the relevant Place of Interest was provided by the respective Local Guide, then hovering over that link will show you the name of the place and selecting that link will take you to a screenshot with details of that place as stored on the Local Guides, 2023 Star Photos post, a “photo album” if you will, of star photos.
If the Maps Category of a star photo is shown on a colored background then that star photo has been selected as one of the best that meets the formatting requirements as specified in the Local Guides, 2023 Star Photos post. Select that star photo’s category and see why it has been rated as one of the best and read more about that star photo on the “photo album” post.
Selecting any of the Connect Usernames will take you to that Local Guide’s Connect Profile.
Preceding some of the leaderboards, you may see a number of featured star photos. If so, these are a selection from those that best meet the requirements as detailed in the Local Guides, 2023 Star Photos post.
Where shown, around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this is the first time that the Local Guide has participated on the Top 100 Star Photos leaderboards.
Where shown, ( ) around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this Local Guide levelled up/down onto this leaderboard.
An asterisk (*) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Connect Moderator.
Double asterisks (**) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Googler.
A ? or the words “Not set” in a cell indicates that the respective value cannot be determined or hasn’t been provided by or for the respective Local Guide.
Local Guides included on the leaderboards must check their entries for any errors. If you should find any errors or omissions, please add the details in a comment on this post. Regarding omissions, please note point 11 above.

A warm welcome and congratulations to @PatrickUnson and @IzzyOz who join us on the Top 100 Star Photos leaderboards with two totally different stars. The first, a storefront shot of a Filipino Restaurant taken by Patrick “Ricky” Unson and the second, a night time shot of a garden taken by Izzy. Given that Izzy is a newbie Local Guide, my guess is that we will see quite a bit of jockeying for pole position between her star candidates and it will be interesting to see which one ends up as being the brightest star.

Interesting observation to make here with some learning. I @Kumaarsantosh was at number 41 in Top 100 Star Photo Views Leaderboard (June 2023) (Level 9 Local Guides) and am again at number 41 in Level 9 Star Views Leaderboard (July 2023). Not only that the Star Views Count also remain the same 398,132 as depicted in Photo 1. What a coincidence!

Now that’s interesting but then I thought of diving deep to find out how come such miracle happens!

Just for the clarity of discussion my Star Photo Views was 1,001,240 on 30-June-2023 when I last updated all other details on Top100 Local Guides

So, I logged-in Top100 Local Guides and started further reading. Guess what I learnt!

I was in the opinion that for Star Photo we just need to update the data once and every month the system will import the latest data from Google Map and accordingly this will get flashed to the Leaderboard unless there is a change in the Star Photo itself. But, here I was wrong. The guideline was something different as depicted in Photo 2.

This caption clearly says that every month we have to update the Star Photo Data. As you can see in Photo 2, I have updated the details on 2023-06-30 but did not update the Views count thinking that system will take care of this , I just updated Star Photo description and Creating your Star Photo description sections only.

So, possibly this could be the reason @AdamGT , why my star photo is missing from the list Star Photos Movers & Shakers Leaderboard( July 2023) which I asked you here.

Now, to summarize, this is a great self-learning about the updating the data. We need to update the details for Leaderboard every month not only for Maps Contributions Data and Maps Data BUT ALSO FOR STAR PHOTO.

Thought of sharing my experiential learning here so as some of us may get benefitted.

Thanks @AdamGT for putting these Leaderboards together to bring all of us on the same platform and learn from each other.

@AdamGT I’m not seeing a photo for @LDiamond that is getting the views shown on this Leaderboard? I think possibly there’s an input error, from when the Star Photo album was last updated in February? 36K views a day would be a lot more than 2.7 million after a year.

Thank you Mikeinthefalls! I will update my information later today. It’s been about a month. I think I will have to change my star photo as well. I have 3 that are at or around 3 million per photo

@LDiamond Excellent, it’s always nice to have options for your Star Congrats on yours

You should check out the Star Tracker feature on the Top 100 VIP - it allows you to track and project multiple photos

My main reason for commenting was to alert Adam to what looks to be an error in the daily views. I’m not taking anything away from your photo - it’s a great view getter. But 36k daily would be just over 1 million per month and I didn’t see any on your profile that were getting that type of average. The Leaderboards work best when all the data is correct, just raising the questions if I find them.
