A popular regular feature on Connect are the Leaderboards, created by our very own Connect Moderator and fellow 2022 Guiding Star, @AdamGT . To those who are new, the leaderboards rank Local Guides on points, photo views, star photo views (star photo being your photo with the most views), and country (the top guides in each country for different contribution metrics). Each has a number of different views of and are packed with detailed information about each participating Local Guide’s Maps contributions data.

From reading many of Adam’s early Connect posts, you can see that he has for a long time been interested in helping Local Guides improve the quality of their contributions. He has also done this with the leaderboards by extending them far beyond their fun and competitive side. To achieve this, he created an innovative online Local Guides system, referred to as the Top 100 Local Guides System, or Top 100 System for short, and made this available to all Connect Local Guides.

In these past 2 months, Adam and I partnered together to create a one-stop video tutorial on the Leaderboards and the powerful System behind them with the objective of making information about participation more accessible to visual learners. The information in this video is accurate as of January 30th, 2023. For more information about the Leaderboards, click here.

The ~20 minute video includes the following and it is recommend that you follow along on a PC:

  • An overview (the history, the 4 sets, and the benefits of the Leaderboards)
  • How to register on the T100 so you can participate on the Leaderboards
  • How to update your Maps contribution data and how to update your Star Photo

The biggest takeaway from the video is the Context Sensitive Online Help information that has been included in the System

As you will see in the video, each month you use the System at top100localguides.com to input and update your Maps contribution data. If there is any doubt about the information that is required to be entered, such as where to find it or what it means, then next to each data entry field there is a blue information icon (animated screenshot below). Selecting this icon will display the relevant online context-sensitive help information on a new tab. From there, you can read more detailed steps that will assist you.

Additionally, the System includes features that help Local Guides track, monitor and improve on their contributions and the outcomes that they achieve. It has a number of powerful leaderboard extensions that provide dynamic tables and charts showing contributions and achievement progress and even deeper analysis of these. Interestingly, it’s because of all those features and benefits that Adam often says that the leaderboards have become a by-product of this project and, you will readily see that many Local Guides using the System agree with him. PERFEKT!!! Das Video ist für visuell Lernende ABSOLUT perfekt. Klar, verständlich, strukturiert und umfassend!

Dank deiner gut artikulierten Aussprache, dem ruhigen und langsamen Redefluss und der gleichzeitigen Textbausteine bleiben tatsächlich keine Fragen bei mir offen.

(Gut, ich kenne das System ja … aber auch ohne Vorwissen ist es meines Erachtens genau DAS was man benötigt um ein Teil der T100 Community zu werden!)

I need to thank you @AZ_2021 for creating this excellent How-to video. I believe it will help many Local Guides with the process of registering for participation on the leaderboards and with entering their contribution data and because of this, it will also go a long way in reducing the calls on my time, which I especially thank you for :slightly_smiling_face:

The video that @AZ_2021 and @AdamGT have created will answer any questions you may have.

I wrote a post last year (that is shared in this post) that briefly summarizes the impact it has had on my views. But, it’s more than that! The analytics the Top 100 site provides are invaluable to Local Guides, it can truly impact your profile. Additionally, the interaction with fellow Local Guides is an unlimited resource to improving the photos you take, the Connect posts you share and the overall effectiveness of your profile.

Yes, I agree with @Mikeinthefalls who put it perfectly. Definitely join Adam’s leaderboards. I love how his Leaderboards offers insights and analytics. The most helpful to me was the Health Check that made me aware that some of my reviews were not visible. I also like how his Leaderboards shows your impact such as the views per day you get on your photos to better measure the quality. :two_hearts:

Wow!! This project keeps growing and growing! Well done @AdamGT and especially @AZ_2021 for this really handy video guide! I know that as the project grows, the process can seem quite complicated for new participants so the video is certainly a great way to ensure everyone has an easy time signing up and playing along with the leaderboards! :sunglasses:

Yes, @AdrianLunsong there’s so much to learn about photos from @AdamGT and his system, but I just caught sight of the link in your signature about How to Write Reviews. I’m sure this will be just as informative as the video here by @AZ_2021 about the Leaderboard registration process. I’ll be sure to read and comment on your “Review” post as I seek to learn more here.

Yes I agree, Adrian- your Review guide is very helpful. I like how you took time to re-edit it with some updated points. The pointer about being concise is now something I’m trying to focus on for my reviews too. I did the same as you before, writing very lengthy reviews. Now, I just focus on the main points, and your guide provides an excellent refresher on what to consider when writing the review. :two_hearts:
