Top 100 Google Maps Local Guides Star Photos (December, 2024)

Neither did I.
Instead subtracting the count of February for the future boards makes sense to me, if @AdamGT still has the necessary historical data and the ideas and resources to implement that change.
There is nothing we can do besides suggesting it.

Yaryman, if your test is implemented, may i suggest April instead of March?

My numbers in March were an approximate reinstatement of the views lost in February, but from April onwards reflect the reduced monthly view counts.

Congratulations @TonysLists That’s an astronomical number. Keep contributing

Wilfred and @tony_b,
Maybe we’re just looking at it differently, but to me if we subtract out the numbers from before February and start counting from March until the future it seems to me that is going back to zero. And what happens with the views of the photos loaded before them.? It seems to me it would be impossible to separate out each month the views from photos loaded after February 7th and from those loaded before then. And regarding our star media, would we have a pre-february 7th star and a post February 7th star? I just can’t see the value in trying to account for the change, as @TerryPG says it is what it is and we just need to keep going forward.

I guess you’re correct, Alfred. It won’t just be one transitional action. There would have to be the same recalculation each and every month into the future. Not really a practical option unless Google was also involved in the solution.

As for the Star Photo, mine has been a red star for a long time and I’d been monitoring the second and third ranked photos to see which one and when they’d surpass the views of the first and become my new star. But that has all changed with the new system now.

Let’s all continue to watch this play out for a bit longer. I actually suspect there was a change in December as my increase in views was double that of other recent months.

I have the perfect analogy for the old and new viewing system.
Before Feb. 7th we were counting the number of dinosaurs before the asteroid hit 65 million years ago killing of most of them.
After Feb. 7th asteroid event we continued to count dinosaurs using the same lists even though there were far fewer dinosaurs to count.

Instead of trying to adjust the old lists, how about just one new list for uploads after Feb. 7th taking into account it now seems unlikely Google is going to change their system and number of dinosaurs is substantially less.

Yaryman, you’ll notice in my response where I started to agree with @Rednewt74, Google would have to also be part of any change. How would you determine what goes on any new post-February list when we upload our monthly info? All the total views would still exist on Google Maps historically, and our highest-viewed photo or video would still be our highest viewed when sorting the list by views. Google would have to actually remove the old stuff for this to work. There’s no way to filter it out.

I understand trying to modify the lists using the Feb. 7th change would be difficult at best.
That doesn’t change the fact, that EVERY list currently is counting the dinosaurs before & after the asteroid hit.
When the FACT of MATTER is, there are fewer dinosaurs after the asteroid hit.

Went through some emails Google sent about pictures I had posted.
The emails shown in the photo are for my star photo which was uploaded Aug, 23, 2023
Two weeks apart I got emails about that photo.
In the period of 14 days, my star photo had increased 100K views, or 7,143 views a day.
My star photo since Feb. 7th has 196,916 views in 317 days, or 621 views a day.

I realize nobody higher up on the old lists wants a change.
I realize nobody who did all the work making the lists wants a change.
I realize nobody cares what a guy with a funny username thinks.
I realize the list may never change to reflect WHAT is NOW FACT.
I will sleep just fine if the lists don’t change.
I am just pointing out using my analogy, the current lists are counting dinosaurs before and after the asteroid hit.
The new reality after the asteroid hit ( Feb. 7th ) using my example, is that there are 91.3% fewer dinosaurs to count.

Why are we counting them on the same lists?
Note - I was passing one class away from having a minor in statistics while in college.

@Yaryman, some of us do understand what you’re thinking, but the real question is, if Google dosen’t reset the clock on this, how would you, me, or Adam separate the old from the new?

Our earthly dinosaurs are no longer seen on the streets. The dinosaurs you refer to on Google Maps are still there, and will be seen whenever we go to Maps for our numbers.

I don’t want to be known as the guy ( Neil deGrasse Tyson) who removed Pluto from the list of planets, but there is NO WAY to FIX the OLD STAR LISTS.

The only fix is starting new star lists that begin in March of 2024.
I also understand that is unlikely to happen considering all the work involved with the old star lists.

Have not received so far.
Where those photos uploaded in 2024?
As far as you can tell, those were the most viewed 2024 uploads?

In answer to questions @Yaryman Yes these were my top photo views uploaded in 2024

I also haven’t received this nice email @TerryPG So each one of these was your star photo at one stage or another on the leaderboard?

Yes Terry, but that’s a sub-title within the email. The title of the email was " Anthony, you really went places in 2024!". Then it went on to explore my year and mentioned my promotion to Level 9, Contribution Views and New Contributions, my two new badges earned, Most Popular Pics, number of places contributed to and the points earned, Reactions, consecutive weeks, and busiest month.

Maybe you could start a thread for those who have received the email, and they could post their view numbers for their 2024 photos.
