Introduction:

This post is all about photo contributions on Google Maps, and more specifically, about the views these photos rack up. It consists of a series of leaderboards showcasing the view counts of hundreds of Local Guides from over 90 countries. There’s a leaderboard for each Local Guide level and in this way you don’t have to be a “top gun” level 10 Local Guide with a mega million views to participate and so you can join in! Yes, whether you’re an entry level Local Guide or from a small country, town or village, or a top level Local Guide from London, New Delhi or New York, you can join in and it’s simple to do! If you want to jump on board, then use this link to register or if you want some help then add a comment in this post and someone will jump in to help you.

Why are photo views important?

We all know that as Local Guides we don’t get points for the views that our contributions generate! However, views are important as they give us a pretty good indication on how we are impacting on our communities at the Local Guide level. For example, they give us a good indication on how many people we have helped make a decision such as what place to visit or what meal to have. So while we don’t get points for photo views, we certainly get an awesome feeling when we see that our photos are being viewed by many people and being visible across Google services, like Search, means that our photo view counts can increase significantly and you will see here on the leaderboards how significant this can be.

Is this just a competition?

While there is an inherent competitive element within them, the Leaderboards are more than just seeing who has the “best” photos or the most photo views, far from it! They have been specifically designed to motivate us, help us to monitor our contributions and performance, and show us how to improve and make better contributions so that we achieve better results, and all in a fun and enjoyable way! This month the featured cover image is a beautiful taken by Level 8 Local Guide @EvaBar as the sun began its descent over the vibrant city of St. Petersburg, Florida. From this vantage point, Eva was treated to a panoramic view of the downtown St. Petersburg skyline, adorned with a tapestry of modern skyscrapers and historic buildings. How to Read the Photo Views leaderboards (February, 2024)

Briefly, this is what you need to know about the leaderboards in this post. For more details see the leaderboard documentation:

1. The leaderboards in this post present details about the photo views of hundreds of participating Local Guides from all over the world. As well as an overall leaderboard ranking the top 100 Local Guides by photo views, you will see leaderboards for different Local Guide levels which provide you with direct comparisons of your photo views achievements with that of your peers.

   There’s also a leaderboard, referred to as the Exclusive Billion Photo Views Club that highlights those heavy hitting, high views Local Guide achievers.

   Finally, there’s a leaderboard that shows the top 100 Local Guides ranked by the Average Views/Photo which gives a good indication of the overall “quality” of all photos taken by each Local Guide. This is simply calculated by dividing the Local Guide’s total photo views value by the number of publicly visible contributed photos. Of course the use of the term “quality” here refers to the attractiveness of the photos to the Google AI and the viewing public.

2. Where shown, around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this is the first time that the Local Guide has participated on the Top 100 Local Guides leaderboards.

3. Where shown, ( ) around leaderboard sequence numbers indicate that this Local Guide levelled up/down onto this leaderboard.

4. An asterisk (*) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Connect Moderator.

5. Double asterisks (**) shown after a Connect Username indicates that that Local Guide is a Googler.

6. A superscript following a Local Guide’s username and the views value shown on a background color indicates that some of that Local Guide’s data has been set to private. The Leaderboards System uses 8 different superscripts to indicate the varying states of a Local Guide’s profile however only 3 superscripts will likely ever be shown on the Leaderboards. In all the remaining 5 cases the Local Guide has been deleted from participation. On the Photo Views Leaderboards you will only ever see the following superscripts used:
   [1] indicates that the number of photos and photo views values are private.
   [3] indicates that both the number of photos and photo views values and the number of reviews and ratings values are private.

7. A ? or the words “Not set” in a cell indicates that the respective value hasn’t been provided by or cannot be determined for the respective Local Guide.

8. Selecting any of the Connect Usernames will take you to that Local Guide’s Connect Profile.

9. The data for the leaderboards in this post was read at 5:00 AM on 2 March 2024 (UTC).

10. If you’re a participating Local Guide you must check the leaderboards for any errors or omissions and if you find any, then please add the details in a comment on this post. Regarding omissions, please note point 7 above.

Thanks @PrasadVR . Yes there was some debate about whether or not to post the February Leaderboards given the recent Maps media issues however in the end the overwhelming view was that we should go ahead. A number of Local Guides including yourself have posted about the impact that these issues have had on their numbers and I indicated that I would do some deeper analysis which I have done and will post about this as soon as I can.

In the meantime, I see that while you are one whose Average Views per Photo increased and not decreased as it has in the case of others, you have not made it onto the Top 100 Level 10 photo views board and hence also not onto the Overall Top 100 board. My guess is that the explanation for this is that having recently jumped from being a level 9 to a level 10 Local Guide, the level 10 photo views entry threshold of some 53+ million was the reason. It’s a bit of an irony in that you can increase you Local Guide level and end up not making it up onto the next level board. It’s all in the numbers!!!

@AdamGT Thank you for your kind clarification. I’ve noticed some interesting trends on the Leaderboard regarding my performance. I am Level-10 in Jan-24 and Feb-24 boards. Despite seeing an increase in my average views/photo in February 24, my ranking has dropped. As you said, it’s all in the numbers.

Very odd. —also, not to pick nits, but the Level 10 link to January goes to the Level 9 January board, not 10. I managed to force my finger to scroll up to look at the list, but I found your Easter Egg this month .

@EvaBar your cover shot is a beauty! Florida has sunsets that can stop you in your tracks, and that’s what happened as soon as I opened the page. Wow!

Confusing times indeed @JustJake and yes it is interesting seeing how differently we were all impacted. As already mentioned in reply to @PrasadVR here, I have already started some deeper analysis to show more of a macro view of the impact and will post this soon. It’s certainly a mixed bag of ups and downs in terms of photo views and I’m interested to get a better understanding of the impact on star photo and star video views.

Thanks for checking and finding the Easter Egg. Deep checking is always needed.
