Top 10 Places to Visit in Pondicherry (Pondicherry Tourist Places)

Pondicherry is known for its beautiful promenades, well-maintained gardens, and huge temples. It’s a perfect destination for a seaside vacation. If you’re planning a visit to Pondicherry, here are some of the best tourist attractions and destinations that you should definitely not miss.

Anyway, here are my favourite places to visit in Pondicherry:

  1. CHUNNAMBAR BOAT HOUSE

Chunnambar Boat House gives you amazing views of the seas and surroundings. It may cost you around Rs 200 to ferry to Paradise Beach and back. Photography charges are Rs 30 extra. It is a place which can be enjoyed and is worth visiting for every age group.

  1. PARADISE BEACH

You reach Paradise Beach via a ferry ride from Chunnambar Boat House. Adorned with golden sands, it is a very clean and well-maintained beach. You can indulge in adventure sports like zorbing, kayaking, parasailing, etc at the beach.

  1. BOTANICAL GARDEN

The Botanical Garden has tall trees, colourful flowers, and beautiful statues. The entry fee is around Rs 40 per person. It was established by C.S. Perrotet in the year 1862. I went there early in the morning for a refreshing start to my day.

  1. BASILICA OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

Within walking distance of the Botanical Garden, we arrive at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. People of all faiths are welcome at this beautiful and peaceful basilica. The lives of Jesus along with the saints of the Catholic Church have been depicted in the stained glass panels of the building.

  1. SEASIDE PROMENADE

Pondicherry’s most popular and happening tourist attraction is its Promenade. You will find many heritage structures here like the Promenade Hotel, Gandhi Statue, Nehru Statue, French War Memorial, etc.

  1. ROCK BEACH

Rock Beach has a vast sea on one side and beautiful French structures on the other side. The famous eatery Le Cafe, serving authentic traditional food and beverages, can be found here. One can also spot a lot of hawkers near the beach, who sell local handicrafts and street food.

  1. BHARTHI PARK

Located in White Town, Bharathi Park is a lush green park flanked by some of the most prominent government buildings in Pondicherry like the Governor’s Palace, Legislative Assembly, Government Hospital, etc. The park flaunts some very gorgeous water fountains, flower beds blooming with bright colored flowers and are dotted with quaint little granite bench for the visitors to relax on.

  1. AUROVILLE

Auroville is a town located around 15 km away from Pondicherry. The main attraction at Auroville is Matrimandir, which is a center of spiritual sciences. Entry is free for all, and you can only buy the tickets in person at the venue, not online.

  1. ARULMIGU MANAKULA VINAYAGAR TEMPLE

Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is said to have been established almost 5 centuries ago. The timings of the temple are Morning: 5:45 AM to 12:30 PM and Evening: 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM.

  1. SRI VARADARAJA PERUMAL TEMPLE

Located in the heart of the city, Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple is beautifully carved and is huge, I could spend hours here. It is less crowded as compared to Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple.

Thanks for sharing @agarwalsonika I visited Pondicherry in 2006 certainly an interesting place to visit. This was one of the places I visited and it was right next to the sea.
