A year or so ago, when ride-sharing became common in Pakistan, I found that while the major roads in Islamabad were labelled, many of the streets were not. Now, I don’t use ride-sharing, but my wife and her family often do. So, I opened up Google Maps, and decided to do something about it. And it felt good, like I was making a real difference, especially when my wife now tells her family that the name of our street is on Google Maps because I put it there.
Since then, I’ve put up pictures and reviews, and answered questions on Google Maps because I feel it’s necessary. I tend to travel a little bit because of my job, and so I do visit a lot of places, both within Islamabad, and beyond. Google Maps is useful, especially how it gives fairly good directions, and is fairly reliable when it comes to traffic updates. If I can add to that database of human knowledge (of my own will), then there’s no harm in it.
With how Islamabad is growing, it’s important for us to keep track of what routes are best for traversing the city, and what places are best for going out to eat with family (and yes, with partners and customers). And Google Maps seems to be a great platform for doing that.
