Sardar Dost Mohammad Khan, who laid the foundation of the Bhopal dynasty in 1720 AD, was born in 1676 AD in Orakzai district near the Khyber Pass in Triha Valley in a reputed Mir Zai Khail tribal family.
Khan joined the Mughal army in Delhi as a soldier in 1703. On the basis of his bravery and skills, he rose very quickly and was given the command of Malwa province. After the death of Emperor Aurangzeb, Khan started giving his military services to the unstable states of Malwa. First of all, he took Berasia on lease and kept providing protection to Mangalgarh from other Rajput kings. He got married to the princess of Mangalgarh who later came to be known as Fateh Bibi. He was also providing his services to Queen Kamala Pati and in return for the service, the queen gave him Bhopal, a small village, which Khan transformed in gated wall city in1720 and established the Bhopal dynasty. This Fort was known as Fateh Garh named after his beloved wife. Khan was close to the Sayyid brothers who played the role of king maker in Delhi. He was a wise ruler but he faced Nizam’s attacks and once his son was taken as hostage.
Sirdar Dost Mohammad Khan bears many titles such as Khan I Moazzam, Masnad I Ale Diler Jung Sirdar.
Founder of Bhopal Dynasty, died on 13th September 1740. His tomb is located inside the courtyard of the mosque near Boys Hostel, Medical College and opposite to the mortuary of Hamidia Hospital, Fatehgarh Fort, Madhya Pradesh.
This tomb of Khan_I_Moazzam is an example of excellent Indo Islamic architecture. It’s built on a raised platform and red sandstone is used in its construction. It’s a square tomb and each side is of symmetrical dentil arches which are supported by three stone columns. Column capitals are decorated with brackets. Stone entablature covers tops of the arches bears the hanging outs supported by stone brackets and above which dome which is a replica of Bengali roof is built. Above the arched ways vertical stones with arches engraved formed the octagonal base for the dome. It’s having very simple carvings includes flowers and geometrical motifs on pillars, brackets, arches and on capitals. He and his beloved wife Fateh Bibi both are buried beside each other and graves are guarded with stone lattices from all the four sides.
It’s a tourist attraction though neglected by most of the tourists and it’s a Protected Monument.
