Tomb of Nawab Siraj Ud Daulah and Beginning of Company Raj.

Tomb of Siraj Ud Daulah, Khoshbagh, Murshidabad, West Bengal, India.

On this great festival of independence, the contribution of Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah to save the independence of Bengal is worth remembering. The main purpose of the Murshidabad visit was to visit the tomb of Nawab Sirajuddaula, which is situated on the west bank of the Hooghly river in Khushbagh, along with getting acquainted with the historical buildings and monuments situated in Murshidabad West Bengal.

This tomb is a single storeyed square building. There are verandahs around the main tomb; each verandah has five arched entrances and two two windows on either side. Central grave chamber is enclosed with walls and can be accessed through the doors provisioned in the cardinal directions in the middle of the walls. Provision of circular windows either side of the entrance for proper ventilation. Exterior walls of the grave chamber are decorated with circular arches. Roof is supported by walls and arches. Roof over the grave chamber is adorned by four minarets on each corner.
This Mausoleum is surrounded by garden as Khushbagh means garden of happiness before the mosque. It has the graves of Nawab Alivardi Khan which has a black and white marble stone’s cenotaph, second of Nawab Siraj Ud Daulah and besides his grave is the grave of his wife Lutfunnisa Begum and few of other family members.
Siraj Ud daulah was the successor of Nawab Alivardi Khan founder of Afshar dynasty. He ascended the throne of Bengal on 9th April 1756 AD and ruled till 23rd June 1757 AD when he lost the Plassey battle.
Siraj-ud-Daulah who had expelled the British out of Kolkata, because the East India Company was continuously violating the conditions of Mughal Emperor Jahangir’s permission to trade in Bengal, leading to loss of revenue. Despite warnings, the illegal activities of the British continued, as a result of which the British had to flee Fort Williams after the invasion of Siraj ud daulah. The same Siraj Ud daulah became a victim of jealousy, greed and conspiracy in which the British also played a major role. Main conspirators were Mir Jafar, Jagat Seth, Omichand, Ghaseti Begum her name was Mehrun Nisa who was the daughter of Alivardi Khan and aunty of Nawab Siraj Ud daulah, Robert Clive etc. While escaping through boat Siraj Ud daulah was captured by Mir Jafar’s soldiers and he was killed in Murshidabad on order of Mir Miran who son of Mir Jafar by Mohammed Ali Beg on 2nd July 1757 AD. Mir Jafar ascended the throne as was promised by the British and Bengal became a suzerain state. Due to this blackguard who was the commander of Nawab Siraj Ud Daulah Company Raj was set up in Bengal.
Thus, after the end of Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah, Company rule had begun in independent Bengal due to the greedy and conspiratorial Mir Jafar and the tactics of the British.
