Lal Khan’s Tomb is one of the protected monument of national importance which is located on the left bank of the river Ganges in the Rajghat area of Varanasi or near the Mughal Sarai bridge, it was built in 1773 AD by the rulers of Varanasi Raja Chait Singh.
Lal Khan was the general of the former king of Kashi, Balwant Singh. He contributed to the expansion and development of Kashi with valor and bravery in the last days of his life. The King of Kashi had promised him to fulfill his last wish. Lal Khan’s wish was that he wanted to see his royal palace. Even after his death, the King of Kashi fulfilled his wish and he was buried.
After the death of Lal Khan, he was cremated at Rajghat and a magnificent tomb was built there. It is located in the middle of a rectangular garden of Char Bagh style. The main structure of the tomb is built on a high square platform. The outer walls of the tomb are decorated with beautiful designs, with two relatively high doors in the middle, which are on the west and west sides of the tomb, the grand dome of the tomb is decorated with colorful tile work, four small chhatris have also been built in the four corners of the dome, the tomb of the brave and loyal commander Lal Khan is placed under the dome. Two other members of his family are also buried in the tomb.
The influence of Mughal architecture is clearly visible on the architectural style of this tomb. There is an inscription in Persian language on the door, which shows that this tomb was built in 1182 Hijri. According to Hijri calendar it was built 264 years ago.
