Together We Can Make a Difference

February 7th held a special sense of excitement for me, not just because of the event itself but also because it gave me the chance to meet new people. As someone who is always eager to learn from others, this was a memorable experience.

On the occasion of World Cancer Day, the group Himu Paribahan, founded by admirers of the famous Bengali writer Humayun Ahmed, organized the seventh annual Run for Cancer Awareness. The primary goal of this event was to raise awareness about cancer, a disease that affects millions globally. World Cancer Day is observed on February 4th every year, and this year, we gathered in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to take part in this meaningful run.

The run started at 8 am. at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, following a route through Doel Square, TSC, the Vice Chancellor’s Chattar, and the Shadhinota Songram sculpture, eventually circling back to Shaheed Minar.

This event was graced by special guests including cartoonist and Unmad editor Ahsan Habib, Dr. Habibullah Talukder Raskin, head of the Preventive Oncology Department at Gonoshasthaya Samajvittik Cancer Hospital, and Dr. Mumit Al Rashid, Head of the French Language and Literature Department at Dhaka University. Mountaineers M.A. Muhit, who has scaled Everest twice, and Nishat Majumdar, the first Bangladeshi woman to reach Everest’s summit, also joined, along with renowned artist Kanak Aditya. Their presence, along with the participation of professionals from various walks of life, made this event truly special.

To ensure participation, a minimum registration fee was required, and the funds raised were donated to the Cancer Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. This not only confirmed a sense of commitment from the participants but also gave them the opportunity to contribute to a noble cause, helping those battling the deadly disease. Often, we spend money on things that do not impact the community, however, through this event, we became part of something bigger by extending a helping hand to cancer patients.

Over 500 participants took part in the run, and they received certificates, T-shirts, breakfast, and water. The support and enthusiasm shown by the people were incredible, making it a beautiful experience for me. I hope events like this spread beyond borders and inspire young people from all over the world to take part.

Health is the foundation of a happy life, and through efforts like this, we can promote both physical fitness and cancer awareness globally. Let’s continue spreading the message of hope and strength, not just within our communities, but worldwide.
