To make Maps more friendly for vertical cities

HK is a vertical city - we have lots of high rise buildings having 30+ levels are very common. For each level, it can have up to tens of occupants.

Thus for a Maps’ Place, if it has only the Street Address, it is very hard for Maps users to locate the Place quickly.

That is exactly the problem we have in HK - lots of Maps places do not have the Level number, and Suite/Unit number included in the Address.

When we try to share the Place to others, as a gathering point, more often than not, people will call and ask where it is - as the Level and Suite numbers are not there in the Maps place.

Thus we are forced to use other Directory websites - simply because the address in those Directory websites are complete.

For example, this place - https://goo.gl/maps/RqySbQmBrmNZvdb17 .

The address field is: CNT Tower, 326-338 Hennessy Rd, Wan Chai, 香港

From their website: https://www.taoheung.com.hk/en/brands/tao_heung/index_p_2.html

The full address is:

2/F., CNT Tower, 338 Hennessy Road, Wanchai, H.K.

CNT tower actually have 31 Levels. If we do not know the correct level number, it is almost impossible to arrive that restaurant quickly.

This is the area I am focused to contribute in Maps - to make it have all the details correct, so that users can rely on it to arrive to the correct place quickly.

Here is what I am doing:

  • use Suggest Edit to fix any address details, and correct any multi-language issues

  • it is my personal experience that, Maps will left out the Level and Suite/Unit number, even I include them when adding / edit an place. When ever that happens to me, I will use Send Feedback to let Maps team know about this.

  • when ever I have chance talking to any Maps team members (during Connect Live events, or via discussions threads in Connect), I will try my best to bring this issue to their attention

I wish Maps will soon have all the correct details to help users to arrive places quickly soon. Thus users in HK can avoid using other Directory websites to help locate the place we need to go.

Wow - @YK1001 you’re always tackling critical problems that I have never thought of. I’m sure that scenario could be quite confusing if the Map is dense with locations in one tower, for instance. Really like this observation.

Thank you very much for hour encouragement, @SP31 !

I can think of for 99% of use cases, Maps is good enough for everyone. The last 1% is very location / region specific.

It is normal for me to notice those 1% in my regions, while I equally will have no idea about your 1%.

Only when all of us tell what is our 1%, then Maps team have a chance to further reduce it, may be to 0.5% for everyone.
