Tip of the Week: Naming businesses on Google Maps

When it comes to naming businesses on Google Maps, it’s important to follow the actual name of the business. We’ll discuss a few best practices and examples for properly doing so below.

For example, some Local Guides might think that it would be helpful to include indicators like “CLOSED” in the title so it’s more prominent. That is not a best practice based on our guidelines. If you want to mark something as closed, you should report the place permanently closed instead of editing to change the name.

Similarly, franchises should always follow the proper franchise names and not include the name of the city or area in the actual name on Google Maps. As an example, the correct way to format Blue Bottle in Brooklyn would be “Blue Bottle” and not “Blue Bottle Brooklyn.”

Were you already aware of these best practices? Do you have any tips like this for your fellow Local Guides? Let us know in the comments below.

Ah, yes. This practice is not so uncommon, @KatieMcBroom . Sometimes a place owner is adding information other than its place official name on its Google Maps profile. Just like in franchise store.

Or even adding their supply on its name (like “xxx is available”).

Maybe they’re hoping doing something like this could help customers find their location and supply availability easily. But it’s not right.

Thanks for sharing the tips. Really nice if you could share it weekly. Appreciate

Nice article @KatieMcBroom ! I always change business names when I see names like “Blue Bottle Brooklyn.” to just the name itself, like you mentioned. Thank you for mentioning it!

I also tend to edit business names when I see them written in all caps, for example, and I correct grammatical mistakes I see.

@KatieMcBroom this is great because with these times many of the businesses are closed or like you say they have changed their names even it was the same business in the past.

Very important point covered @KatieMcBroom and thanks clarifying so nicely.

I had observed a many times that the respective businesses add thier services, locality etc in the name which actually not required since you have options adding it specifically. I had changed it as you’ve suggested here.

Thanks again.

Cheers!

I wasn’t aware of either though including the locality name as part of the business is rampant on Google Maps.

Thank you for the wonderful tips @KatieMcBroom

@KatieMcBroom Good tip! I am aware of the best practices.

My tip: Always add a name in the same language as your Maps language. I mean if the language is set to English in Maps then add name in English. Not in other languages. This confuses the Maps. And when we edit we see the wrong name in the wrong language field.

Thanks!

Thanks for sharing this @KatieMcBroom .

My tip, when it comes to business names, would be to check for listings with the name written in ALL CAPS. Some business owners try to stand out on the map by having their name written in capital letters, which is also not the proper way to go about. So, when I come across such listings, I change the name to “normal” capitalization. (Mind you: this obviously does not apply to names which are acronyms, such as KFC.)

Businesses should stand out by delivering amazing products or services, not by resorting to tricks.

How not to agree @KatieMcBroom

My last edit is dated two days ago. Changing and fixing the names according to the rules is one of my duty, and I am contributing to this very frequently

The sign on the entrance of the trail was clear, however someone was naming the place with a totally different name.

Unfortunately ir is more difficult to change the name when the business is claimed. I think GMB should put a stronger control in there, because a lot of our edits, even if approved, are reverted back in a few hours/days by the businesses. As you can see in the example here below, the my edit was accepted but after that the business reverted the name back to the Inappropriate original one

Thanks for sharing @KatieMcBroom , I’m aware of what you are telling us in the post.

The clear name of the POI is one of the most important thing among others to right identify a business in the MAP.
