The new features will give us more control over how Google Maps is tracking our movements and where this data is stored. I think having timeline data stored locally will be safer. We can backup this data to the cloud. I just hope that this change will also increase the precision of the timeline with more measurements.
These changes will gradually roll out through the next year on Android and iOS, and you’ll receive a notification when this update comes to your account.

I’m curious about what will happen to our contribution data once this happens. I have my location history set to “All Eternity,” and once made a change to delete anything past 3 years. The counter for my ‘Answers’ dropped significantly. I did not lose points, but the tracking was lost. Should we expect that Google will retain our contributions forever while we limit our location data?
