TIME TRAVEL TO THE PAST AROUND AHMEDABAD

After I had moved to the city of Ahmedabad, the largest in Gujarat in the summer of 2010 I was pretty excited to visit its famous and historically paramount locations as I had read in multiple books. Visiting a historic place is almost like time-travel and I am writing and compiling this list for future visitors’ reference. Feel free to add to this list with places that have helped you connect to the past and appreciate our journey:

1.Sabarmati Ashram (also known as Gandhi Ashram, Harijan Ashram, or Satyagraha Ashram):

Located on the banks of the River Sabarmati. Mahatma Gandhi resided at this place and also his base fro where he started Dandi March(also known as the Salt Satyagraha on 12th March 1930). The Dandi bridge is at a walking distance from the main gate of the Ashram.

2. Adalaj Stepwell:

A stepwell built in 1498 is a fine example of Indian architecture. Intricately carved sandstone in the Solanki architectural style surely capture your interest in this five stories deep well.

3.Sidi Saiyyed Mosque:

The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, also famously known as Sidi Saiyyed ni Jali built in the 1570s AD. The mosque is entirely arcuated and is known for its ten intricately carved stone latticework windows (jalis) depicting the tree of life on the side and rear arches. These jalis have also inspired the logo for the world renowned institute IIM-Ahmedabad.
