Thumbnails have been duplicated abnormally. (SV App, 360-degree Video)

Thumbnail duplication occurred when uploading 360-degree videos of the SV App.
The screenshot below is an example of two thumbnails of a video that started shooting at 15:19 out of a series of videos that were automatically divided in 3-minute increments.

Due to this symptom, I uploaded the same video multiple times.
Every time I wasted internet traffic and time.
If there are two or more of the same thumbnails, I didn’t delete the surplus because the deletion process could result in the loss of the information shown by all (including the correct) thumbnails at the same time.

I can guess some of the causes of this symptom.
The “Upload” button on the screen where the Video should appear is unresponsive, so I’ve tapped it multiple times.
The following is a video of the intentionally pressing multiple times for shooting.

Of the number of times you pressed it, it may have been enabled several times and uploaded multiple times.
That may have been the cause of the four thumbnails at the same time, as shown below.

The SVs from these uploads have not yet been published on the web. I imagine it will be displayed in a few days.
So I can’t show the URL of the SV created from these thumbnails, but the tech team should be able to get that information easily.
However, there is no guarantee that the same correct SV will be created from the same thumbnail, so I would like to watch the transition of the situation.

Is there anything I should do after this?

I had already pointed out this symptom a year and a half ago.
The street view below was taken by walking around the circular facility only once. However, there were multiple thumbnails and a double SV was created.
However, their contents were not the same.
It can be inferred that different time position information is assigned to each thumbnail. Therefore, there is a gap between the correct position of the image and the position in SV.

I answered as follows :

I experimented today.
I just deleted the data of SV App the other day, but this experiment started after deleting the data of SV App first.
In the following Youtube, the operation of deleting the data is also taken.

In this experiment, no duplicated thumbnails issue occurred.
Therefore, the following Youtube video is a record of normal operation and is not useful for this survey.

So the answer to your question is:

Q1) Does this issue occur for every video that you capture?
A1) No, it’s not a symptom that happens every time.

Q2) Can you try to press upload once and then wait for the upload to start, instead of pressing it multiple times?
A2) In this test, this experiment was not possible because uploading started at the same time as tapping the upload button.

I’m guessing that this issue will occur as the size of the SV App’s data area grows.
I will continue to investigate this issue.

URLは、サムネイルをタップして得られるURLをGoogleMapsWebで閲覧してから、視点やZoomの操作をせずに短い共有URLを取得しました。
同じ時刻のVideoから作成された同じ地点の写真でも、画像の傾きが異なっています。明らかに、GoogleのVサーバー内で異なる処理が施されています。
そのため、同じ地点のVideoが複製された場合には、複数の青線が重なって作成されていると推測できます。

I succeeded in a reproduction experiment that doubles thumbnails.
Also, when I tap the upload button, the color changes and I can confirm that the tap was done, but if the upload progress bar is not displayed after that, the fact that the upload is not done even after waiting for 6 hours I confirmed one example.

After that, I shot a 360 ° video for about 10 minutes and uploaded it.
In the above Youtube, the situation is taken until the upload is completed.
At this point, there was almost no garbage in the SV App user data.

And on January 13th, I shot a 360 ° video for about 90 minutes.
In the first upload, I was able to reproduce the double thumbnail by operating as follows.
Below, the time notation is used to identify the thumbnail.
In my shooting method, there should be only times that are more than 3 minutes apart.

“10:06” Video upload has started.
Immediately after that, I tapped the upload button of “10:03”, but the upload did not start.
“10:06” stopped with 100% display and the upload was not completed normally.
So I swiped out the SV App and then reopened it.
Then, “10:06” was “in process”, but another thumbnail of “10:06” was increased as an unuploaded one.

Six hours after doing this, I checked the SV App after restarting my smartphone.
After all, “10:06” still existed double.
And “10:03” have not been uploaded.

1月13日に撮影したVideoは、昨日のアップロード操作でサムネイルをダブらせた "10:06"を含んで、アップロード済のVideoすべてが「内部エラー」だと表示されています。
また、1月5日に撮影した70本のVideoは順次処理が進んでいたはずなのですが、10日程度経った昨日の段階で未だに「処理中」だったVideoの殆どが「内部エラー」に陥りました。

幸いなことに、処理が完了したビデオが1部分のみ存在し、それらはWebに公開されています。

「内部エラー」とは、ユーザーのデータの責任ではなく、サーバー内の都合によるエラーであると明記された誠実なエラーメッセージだと思います。
これが発生したのは、エンジニアが、現在処理中だったVideoをすべてキャンセルしたことが原因だと想像しています。

「ぜひ再処理をしてください。よろしくお願いします」と、再度連絡しました。

@potaro67 as I understand it this video mode you’re using through the SV app has been deprecated and isn’t available in the latest version. You need to use the new video mode https://blog.google/products/maps/anyone-can-share-their-world-with-street-view/ instead.

My experience of duplicate uploads has been around poor connectivity when I think the file hasn’t uploaded but it is continuing to do so in the background and I’ve initiated the upload again. The latest version of the app seems to ignore subsequent attempts to reupload the same video.

I also use the video mode you guided me to. It’s a flat video shot with a smartphone camera.

There is a screen in the SV App called “New Version of SV App”.
Among them is the option to connect a 360 degree camera. I think that feature will continue.
And SV Trusted Help also said that the material I sent helped me understand the SV App’s faults.

I think these two video modes will continue to exist in parallel.

The feature of connecting an external camera is being retained for still images only @potaro67 - interval and connected photos via uploaded video stream are not part of the new app. You can still use them in the old version until June 2021. I got an answer from SV Trusted Help.
They indicated that my symptoms could be due to another problem that the engineer was already working on.
And I was advised to wait patiently for a week, even though they couldn’t tell when the symptoms would go away.

I have a lot of doubts about this answer.
(1) What are the existing problems? Also, is that information publicly available?
(2) What does it mean to wait for a week?
(3) Furthermore, which of the “thumbnail duplication” and “internal error” is the information about this answer?

For me, I just received an email with no information.
But it’s not a shame for me that the problem doesn’t go away. It just makes Google’s SV team less credible.
I will wait for a week.

I can’t give you any other source @potaro67 yes the new feature is not described there yet, perhaps it might not be since its aimed at community contributors and that resource is not open to community contributors.

It seems that two different SV blue lines are made from these two thumbnails.

There is a part where the blue line is out of alignment with each other. In other words, the same treatment is not applied to the two videos.
There may be differences in the information that these two thumbnails have.
Alternatively, the blue line creation logic may be such that some random parameters are added to the same information to produce different results.

It’s easy to see that it’s impossible to shoot a video that is more than a minute long and has the same timestamp.
Therefore, these videos are the same video with multiple thumbnails created.
And their contents do not seem to be the same.
Please fix this symptom.

I will continue to experiment and watch these symptoms.

And in regards to the duplicated thumbnails issue, their technical support’ suggestion is that I delete the duplicate ones, they said.

So I decided to delete the duplicate one.
I know that the thumbnails that appear above in the Profile tab are newer than the below one. So I thought duplicates were the thumbnails shown above.
I did a delete operation on it.

I will watch the future of this SV from the following perspectives.
・ Will this operation eliminates the duplication of the blue line?
・ Will not be the correct SV deleted?
