Through the Lens: Tower of Merchants, Sibiu, Romania

I have finally decided to try one of those photo-walk style posts and I cannot find more appropriate landmark than the one I enjoyed taking these photos of. It’s called The Merchant Tower and it’s located in Sibiu, Romania. If you have read one of my recent posts you will also see a previously described landmark somewhere on the pictures. Will let you guess which one is it and which photo is it visible at
Now, off to the photo walk!

Merchants Tower in Sibiu is one of the few fully functioning and open for tourists. It’s been named after the local guild which took care of it and funded the place during the fortification times. There was a tower for each guild in town back in those days. No guided tours are provided but be sure, it will be pointless to come with more than 3-4 friends and without the online articles. Finding the clarifications on your own is way enjoyable at this landmark. You will see why below:

The tower is located in the walking area of the Old Town in Sibiu. It will be fairly hard to get here with local transport because the center of this town is a large walking zone. Something I really appreciate and cherish, personally. The location is great because most of the landmarks are visible from the top of this tower. The tower looks like this:

There’s an admission but the exposition is more valuable than the price. What’s more important - at the time of my visit I just got in and paid at the exit.

The tower has a lot of stairs and like, 4 or 5 floors of middle ages, fortification history, torture artifacts … and ‘ideas’. The clock section at the top has wooden floor and stairs with guest expositions. Mainly paintings and small sculptures. Beware, stairs are narrow and steep. Some of the exposition artifacts look like this:

I would like to add that, stairs are perfect if you want to look gigantic.

The section on top used to be a watchtower and it still is. There are pictures on the walls explaining what’s visible and where, so that you could always know what are you looking at … and taking a picture of.

Quick edit: For those who plan the walk, you can check the location here.
Hope you liked the walk and some of you would join the visitors club of this place. There’s a lot more to see. I have kept some of it a secret but your comments can reveal some of the other artifacts from this tower.

Thank you, @shantanu-kaizen . Appreciate that. Do you know of any similar buildings in your town or the surrounding area?
